Jolivette's Story
I was raised in the Hollywood Neighborhood on Ledbetter Street. I attended Hollywood Elementary School from 1972 to 1979 (Kindergarten through 6th Grade). My older sister Jacqueline and younger brothers Jethro and Arve also attended the school. The principal at the time was Billy J Walker. I even remember the names of my teachers:
Mrs. Wesley - Kindergarten
Mrs. Raley - 1st grade
Mrs. Haley - 2nd grade
Mrs Hamilton - 3rd grade
Mrs (Hamilton) Miles - 4th grade
Mrs. Ferguson - 5th grade
Mrs. Barnhill - 6th grade (Mrs Wilson for Math)
Mrs. Odom - Librarian
The original Hollywood School was on Third Street (now Ledbetter Street) in the field across the street from Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Helen Johnson was the Principal and the Teacher. rs. Lois Bryant and Mary Brown. Mrs. Mary told me they used to walk to the "Holy Ghost' Church o Nicholson Street for Lunch. Mrs. Lois told me that her father, Mr Bryant built the school which was similar to a one-room school house often seen in movies. The architecture of some of the 'shot gun' homes still in the neighborhood may give us insight into what the school may have actually looked like.
I was told the school was moved to 6310 Clift Street in 1959.
When I was young, I did a report on Mrs. Helen Johnson and the history of Hollywood School. I need that report today. I am writing about the history of the Hollywood Neighborhood for my PhD research that documents Black culture in Black Neighborhoods.
If anyone has pictures or information of Hollywood Elementary School from Third Street or 6310 Clift Street locations, please share them with me. I will credit you or your family archive in my research.
