Jon's Story

Retired Senior Chief Intelligence Specialist, US Navy; past news reporter & marketing manager with Republic & Gazette newspapers; later worked several years in EMS for Southwest, then Rural/Metro as their national marketing director. For past several years, now a high school history and government teacher following in the footsteps of the late great Mr. McAndrews. Active in the American Legion; past service on city commissions and committees with the City of Phoenix and City of Scottsdale. Living the good life and still working in Phoenix. I loved my 22 years in the Navy and I love being a public educator teaching AP US History and Criminal Law. I am still doing consulting work in public safety and EMS for cities and counties. Graduated from ASU (B.S.) and GCU (M. Ed.). Go Lancers! I am a history teacher and I would greatly appreciate catching up with any old classmates. I went to SHS for 2 years, then family moved to Phoenix, where I finished at Gerard Catholic, which closed in 1989. I liked Salpointe the best, riding the bus every day to/from Our Mother of Sorrows, the teachers were great and each of you were kind. This year (2023) has been different as a teacher. Some of my past students are now in uniform, or attending a service academy or ROTC program on full scholarship, wanting to serve others. The granddaughter of cous...Expand for more
in by marriage is one of my students and her grandfather is an old friend. Most everyone I went to HS with I think is retired, but I am a healthy 68 (God willing), a proud dad of a Sun Devil, lover of dogs, and teaching teenagers. I regularly remember who taught me social studies and history and try to be as good as they were. Mr. McAndrews was my favorite, who sadly, passed away too young. Our paths continue to cross over time. For three years, in between a newspaper career and Navy pursuits, I worked as a parole investigator for the state. It was with great OMG that one day a case file came for my investigation and one of our SHS classmates was a victim (who has gone onto a good life as I found out later). The crossroads of our lives are many. If we were all in a room, we could compare notes, crushes, remember how socially silly we were then, remember moments that hopefully for all made us better. There were many of us in the Class of '73. I know many of you have left great impressions in the path you have traveled. I'll respond to anyone who reaches out. Out of 12 years of Catholic education, my walk away is that I feel like St. Paul on mission, it is just the audience is always changing. For the years at first Our Mother of Sorrows and then at SHS, I am blessed. I hope your journeys continue to be fun and bring a smile.
