Jon's Story

Life My H.S. sweetheart and I graduated from Fort Lewis College in '87 and I went to work as a Manager with Avis Rent A Car at Stapleton International Airport. Kristine was a Manager with Cole National, a large company that owns Things Remembered retail stores. Avis transferred me from Denver to Kansas City in '88 then on to Phoenix in '89...Lots of great people there - if any of my Avis buddies read this, shoot me a message: subwaysubs at msn dot com. I would love to hear from you! We left Avis, Cole National and a lot of really good friends behind in Phoenix to open our first Subway franchise back in Denver in 1990. We worked like dogs open to close seven days a week for two years to get our financing of that store paid off. Lived in some pretty ratty places too! Since then we have had nine Subway locations including two in the old Mile High Stadium and throughout the Denver Metro area. Saw The Pope and The Stones (no, not together) while working at Mile High! Currently we have five stores in and around Denver. I finally married Kristine in 1992 after convincing her we wouldn't have to live in the back of our Subway store. I think that's the year we swore off the Subway product too after eating it almost exclusively for a couple of years to save money. Way too much of a good thing! In '98 we started a second small business buying, remodeling and selling beach front condos in one of our favorite places - Florida. I still do all of the work myself - anything from electrical, tile, drywall and plumbing to the final interior decor. Generally, we gut the entire unit and start over from scratch. I find my efforts at this business personally rewarding because when the condo units are finished, they are better than new and show like models. While it didn't interest me too much in High School, I now find anything about architecture, construction, landscaping and remodeling very interesting. I guess my ...Expand for more
parents were lucky I didn't start ripping down walls back then. My home improvement projects in Colorado that I am most proud of have included a 50' long moss rock waterfall, stream and pond system that pumps 750 gpm in my back yard, a tricked out custom home theatre and a 380 bottle wine cellar. Kristine doesn't swing a hammer or run a power trencher. Tools are off limits - (sorry honey but you remember the rototiller incident). However, she is the ultimate Home Depot runner. Kristine knows her way around a H.D. and can tell the difference between 14 gauge NM-B Romex and a 3/4" pvc coupling. As it turns out, H.D. is my daughter Ashlyn's favorite store too! - (for now). Kudos to all my old shop teachers. It's hard to believe that first wooden desk clock project that looked like crap in Junior High shop would ever lead to this! In 2005 I became a dad for the first time! I was always afraid of that prospect but I'm not sure why because it has added a whole new dimension to my life that I enjoy more than anything else. Why didn't someone tell me kids are actually FUN and interesting to watch grow? I admit they probably did tell me, but I was too afraid my lifestyle would be negatively impacted - I'm just not the minivan sort of guy. I still like fast, loud cars and an occasional trip to the race track with my sports car. Guess what - none of it matters and I still find a moment here or there to do what I used to "love". Ashlyn hasn't changed anything - except for the better. I just learned that what I "love" has changed dramatically. She never ceases to amaze me and she really is the total package as kids go! She is so much like her parents (loves cars, music, the beach, animals, shopping with mom) but totally different at the same time. She has a flair all her own and can be as independent as they come. I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful wife and daughter. I'm just enjoying every moment.
