Occupation: High School Educator in a very 'urban' school until Hurricane Katrina. Now we've relocated to Crestview Florida, where I'm a teacher at the Okaloosa County Correction Facility for middle and high school students, which is just like teaching at my old school except we have fences with barbed wire. In my free-time, I'm a volunteer firefighter with North Okaloosa Fire District, and I'm also a group leader in CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) for North Okaloosa. I was recently made Cubmaster of the local Cub Scout pack here in Crestview.
We love it here; you can leave your house and cars unlocked without having to worry, you can walk around your yard in whatever you want and no one is there to see you, and people are actually honest and FRIENDLY here! The kids wanted chickens and ducks on the acre of land we live on, and so we get to wake up with geese honking and roosters crowing every morning, plus so many eggs that we give them away to friends by the basket. The downside is that the only real place to shop in the town is at the WalMart 'Stupid-store'. If you have to do any major shopping, you need to drive to Pensicola or Ft. Walton- it's the price for li...Expand for more
ving in a small town.
School
The highlight of my high school experience was being a foreign exchange student with Youth For Understanding (YFU) for a year (1979-1980). There's nothing like going to Germany and living with a German family, going to a German school, etc., and not knowing a word of german when you go there. I missed out on my junior year at Aldine Sr. High because of the experience, but it was worth it. High school? I've tried to look up some close friends I had at Nimitz and Aldine High, some I knew at UNO, and some I met thru other friends, but it's almost impossible with everyone moving around, people getting married and changing their names, etc.. There are some really cool people from my past I would really like to hear from again if you've got a minute (you know who you are).
College
Miss all of my friends that I knew in the dorm at UNO, and the SABR fraternity. College was a nice break from reality. It's too bad my boys won't be able to attend UNO like I had hoped they would.
Workplace
Who would have thought I would wind up being a Sp. Ed. teacher? Anyone that knew me would have thought I would have served 20 in the military or have gotten a full-time job in emergency management. Well, I did apply for the Director's position in New Orleans a few years back, and I'm sure glad now I didn't get it. My volunteer position as Command Captain of Operations kept me in the middle of it all. Now get this...... we had a CERT board meeting a month or so before hurricane Katrina and discussed how was the city going to evacuate all of the people without transportation. I suggested we use the rail lines by the Superdome and ship people out in boxcars to Baton Rouge or somewhere in north Louisiana. One city official said that sounded barbaric, like something out of nazi Germany. I responded by saying that having people uncomfortable for an hour or so would be better than having to deal with dead bodies...... who was right? Now we've relocated to Crestview Florida, in Okaloosa county, which is a culture shock for me. having to get up at 5am to go to work.... ouch! At least the pay is REALLY good compared to the chicken feed we made in Louisiana.
