Jon's Story

Life I'm sure we all remember how bad the Oregon economy was back in the early '80's. Well, Lady Luck saw it fit to have me join the unemployed sector so I enlisted in the U.S. Army in April of '84 and spent 2 years on active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division. What a Ride!! After an Honorable Discharge in '86, I went to work for a wood products mill in North Carolina as a Qaulity Control Technician. In mid '87 I joined the Navy Reserves for about a year, still working the civilian job as well. I then moved back to the East Coast to work in a wood products machinery plant assembling some of the high tech equipment used in the mills. I owe this career progression move to a better money offer. Once in this job, I was forced to transfer from the Navy Reserve to an Army Reserve Special Forces Unit in Washington State. I moved back to the East Coast in '90, once again working as a Quality Control Technician...Expand for more
and a better offer for pay. I remained working there until the Gulf War broke out in '91. At that time I enlisted in the Marine Corps and have been serving ever since. I did 4 years in the infantry field with a specialty in Anti-Armor and then moved over to the Intelligence field in '95. I am currently a Gunnery Sergeant stationed at the US European Commands Joint Analysis Center, England. The Marine Corps has been very generous in allowing me to travel quite extensively throughout the World, free of charge. I have been as far West as Korea & Mainland Japan, as far East as Israel and the South Red Sea, as far South as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as far North as New Foundland, and have floated throughout the Mediterranean Sea twice. I have also been in country in Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia. Conducted exercises in Canada, Turkey, Greece and Israel. I wouldn't trade my time in the Marine Corps for anything.
