Jon's Story

In 2022 I closed my construction company after being diagnosed with cancer. Since then I've been battling with the side effects of chemotherapy which has been pure hell and doubt I would ever do it again. It's prostate cancer (stage 4) that had spread into my bones and the doctors didn't have much hope but the chemo did work and my last scan showed it was still in one of my ribs but no other bones and still shrinking. I still have cancer in the prostate but my psa number which they use to track it has gone from 48.2 to <0.1 and undetectable for the past few months (normal range = 1- 4.5). As you can see that has pretty much been the focus of everything in my life for the past two years so I don't have much else to talk about these days. I still help out my old customers and subcontractors with their paperwork and try and teach them how to do what we did for them but that hasn't worked out very well. No one had a clue how detailed installing some foundations and burying some conduit could get when you do it like the specifications call for. I've even had to explain to engineers what their drawing were really saying according to industry standards since all they learn is cut and paste these days. (But you have north on 3 different sides of the building on 3 different pages) Anyway, I'm still alive and being a pain in the butt to everyone I can be, just like always. I don't...Expand for more
tolerate "just get it done" or "let the next guy worry about it" on a job site or off and irritate the hell out of people by asking them to do something the correct way all the time. It's great fun and also keeps me from falling into the pit of being "normal" or "average". I've been married 3 times but finally got it right and Katie and I have been together 31 years now. She takes great care of me in my "cancer" state and I pretty much turned over everything to her to take care of with money and decision making since she will be around a lot longer than I will. One of my sons and his "gag" woman live with us and it's been great to finally be a dad and friend to him. His older brother lives in Chicago and is probably a millionaire working for CDW, one of the world's largest computer sales companies. We sit and wonder who's kid he really is since he's the most outstanding father, husband (ex now days) and person I've ever met except maybe for my brother Paul. Now you know my story in case I can't make it to a 50 year class reunion which I haven't heard a word about so far. We should at least reserve some place where we can sit and have a drink or just take out meds and complain about life for a while. One last time of getting together with everyone would be kind of cool. I doubt I'll make it another 5 years for the next reunion. I love the photo Joe. Take care everyone.
