Jon's Story
Life
After graduating from THS in 1987, I attended Asbury College and graduated in 1991. My degree was in Education (Music--Vocal and Instrumental--K thru 12). However, self-inflicted pain from a torch would be more pleasurable than teaching Elementary School. Some people are cut out for it...I am not.
I was very fortunate to obtain a teaching position where I completed my student teaching in Harrodsburg, KY at Mercer County High School. For two years, I had a tremendously enjoyable run as the Choral Director at Mercer County High School (and Junior High School).
In spite of the success I had there, a great opportunity opened up at Eastern Kentucky University where I got a Teaching Assistantship and completed my Master of Music (in Choral Conducting) degree in 1994.
I then decided to move back home because I had developed a disease called Lupus (and the Lupus Anticoagulant).
In 1995, a Choral Music position opened at Tavares Middle School. Can you believe that I taught at the same Middle School mo...Expand for more
st of us attended (and where my Mom taught English for 15 years)?
Unfortunately, my physical condition developed to such a degree that I was not able to continue with teaching. At the time, I stretched myself too thin by teaching full-time, directing a Church Choir part-time, and attending Law School in the Evening Division. I should have known better than to attempt such a ridiculous schedule! I wish I could have finished Law School, but I just couldn't do it!
By the way, my Mom (whom most of you had for 8th grade English) retired in 1995.
Although I don't generally subscribe to the idea of governmental "handouts", I was forced to apply for Full Social Security Disability Benefits due to the Lupus and Lupus Anticoagulant conditions I endure. FORTUNATELY, I am still able to use my musical skills as a Church Musician (Pianist and Choral Director)! I AM THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE THE GIFTS THE LORD HAS GIVEN ME!!
I wish you all well.
Sincerely,
Jon Sprague
