Jon's Story
Thanks for visiting my profile! Pulled out the old yearbook recently? I did! It's great to see some of you posting pictures on here so we know what you look like now! (And some of you--seriously--need to post a current picture or two! Hello!? Cell phone cameras!!)
And now my story:
Some of you will remember me from Froebel Primary or Southridge Elementary, or even from CJHS, even if you didn't know me in high school. What you might remember about me from my CHS days: I was in choir and band, and I was the choir president for a year or two (somewhere I still have my "letter" for choir). I played trombone and later, upright bass. I was in band but somehow negotiated with Mr. Wirt not to be in marching band (and I have no idea how). I was very involved in my church (First Baptist), where for a year or so I was the youth group president. I was pretty reserved (though I do remember TP'ing a few houses in my day!) and conservative. Ann Smuts and I sang a song at graduation, written by Larry Finney (?). I'm sure you remember that well.... :-)
Favorite teachers from my Charlotte days were Mrs. Gildart, from Southridge Elementary; Miss Latham at CHS; BC from CHS; Mr. Hylen from CHS. For some reason my teachers from junior high were less memorable, though I had great respect for Mr. Phillips, who directed the CJHS band when I was in it, and I remember Mr. Casler, who was famous for giving students "froggies."
Since CHS: I left Charlotte in 1981 for college in the Chicago area and lived there for about 14 years. I left Chicago (Elgin, really) for Colorado Springs in 1995 and lived there until last year (2010) when I made the move to Brooklyn, NY. I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan. I can't see it's a dream come true--it's so far beyond anything I ever dreamed of. I'm working as a book editor in the city, and my job is challenging and fascinating.
For those who remember, I played the piano then and still play, though not very much lately. I hav...Expand for more
en't played either the trombone or the string bass in ages, but I do sing in choirs periodically.
I've worked in publishing for the past 20 years, with a stint at Starbucks as well, and worked unitl last year for Random House (part of the Crown Publishing Group as of 2009).
I have been able to travel to Europe and Costa Rica, as well as to many of the fifty states. I'd love to do more traveling and hope to do so soon. It looks as if no Charlotte trip will happen this year, though who knows?
I had mixed feelings about my CHS years (didn't we all?), but there are people I remember very fondly. I was sort of glad to go away when I left for college, and I am glad for the opportunities I've had since leaving. I get back to Charlotte now maybe once a year, and to be honest, I appreciate the town more now than when I was there (and certainly more than right after I left). What surprises me is that I can easily walk the circumference of the whole (main part of) town and enjoy doing so when I am visiting. It didn't seem nearly so small when I lived there! Charlotte has some architectural delights, and I'm a member of the Court House Association, which is helping preserve the wonderful old Eaton County landmark.
In addition, we own stock in Spartan Motors, a Charlotte employer, and I'm happy to report its stock has done quite well during this economic downturn. I've also become interested in Charlotte history, and own a cool Art DecoWilcox-Gay tube radio (made in Charlotte; the company closed in 1960 if I recall correctly).
I think some people who knew me then would be (pleasantly) surprised at the person I am now. If you remember me, say hi. I would enjoy a "hello" from classmates from my Froebel Primary and Southridge Elementary days as well as those who remember me from CJHS and CHS. If we were in choir together, drop me a note. Or band. Or whatever. I'm on Facebook as well and have been privileged to reconnect with a number of classmates there.
