Jonathan's Story
Life
Jonathan Carmen left Wellesley Sr High one month into his senior year, graduated in 1974 from CAE in Boston. In 1977, he started the seminal Boston punk band Thrills under his stage name, Johnny Angel. Thrills released a single and a mini album in their 5 year career and are featured on Rhino Records D-I-Y series. After a brief hiatus, Angel/Carmen began the Blackjacks in 1983. A more mainstream and popular group, the Blackjacks made a pair of albums and toured the States until their break-up in 1986. Angel/Carmen formed the comedy troupe Swinging Erudites then, and had a world-wide dance hit in 1987, "Walk With An Erection". That group disbanded in 1989 and he relocated to Los Angeles, where he has been a syndicated columnist in the Los Angeles Weekly and has acted in videos...Expand for more
from Cher, Metallica and others and starred in independant films Bellyfruit and 14 Stories, as well as hosting LA's only commercial liberal talk show on KFI640AM.
Since the birth of his first son, Xerxes, in 2002, he has done national radio shows as substitute host for Alan Colmes, Mike Malloy, John Gibson and Stephanie Miller and has done morning and afternoon local drive time talk on KIFR-FM in San Francisco and WRKO-AM680 in Boston as well as full-time on KTLK-AM1150, Los Angeles.
Amidst the radio madness, his second son, Zaz was born. Thrills' music has been re-released on Bacchus/Dionysus and the Blackjacks on Retrospect. He is also familiar to many as the "down and out homeless guy" in the VW commercial, 2007.
No third child is expected, but in this life, who knows?
