Jonathan's Story
Life
I was a war baby, WWII thank you very much, conceived soon after December 7th, born in Chicago and adopted by a wonderful family in Evanston. The first of four children. The second, my only sister, died of a brain tumor at age 2. And 2 younger brothers, Tom and Bob.
Went to summer camp. One year the cabin next door got crushed by a massive Oak during a line squall. The next year another cabin got hit by lightening. On both occasions a camper died.
Got interested in electronics, became a Ham, sat in a wet swimming suit and worked on TV's.
Did a lot of Civil Defense work, radiation related and radio, etc. Worked on AV and TV equipment.
Bulletproof ... Lucky
Grade school, Junior High and finally High School were uneventful. Senior class at ETHS was well over 1000. Drove a Pedi cab one summer on Navy Pier. Got to be an honorary member of the teamsters union.
Joined the Navy on a kiddy cruise - 'till my 21st birthday. Went to boot camp at Great Lakes - liked it so much that I stayed and went through class "A" Electronics and then Data Systems Technician schools. Wow, learning a...Expand for more
bout and working on computers in 1961.
Got a fleet appointment to the Naval Academy, then thru Naval Academy Prep School and on to my Plebe year at Annapolis. Flunked French and Chemistry so back to civilian status just in time for my 21st birthday.
Got married, started a family (had 4 great kids,) finished College at IIT, and went to work for IBM as a Systems Engineer. Went to lots more schools, hopped from company to company and ended up a VP of DP at a stock exchange listed Insurance Company. Started to use telecommuting in 1983.
Had a heart attack in '93 and drove myself and my oldest daughter to the ER.
Life's too short. So I decided to go cruising, went and got a 24' sailboat. Sailed her from Chicago, down various rivers and hit the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile. South to Key West, ending up at Jekyll Island, Georgia, made several side trips to the Bahamas. All the while single handed.
For Y2K stayed in Chattanooga, this on a 35' twin diesel stinkpot. Finally, swallowed the anchor, homeless, except for this
site and the homes of my loved ones.
