JONATHAN's Story
Life
After high school I went through a broad series of educational and life experiences. I've lived in New York, Illinois, Germany, and Texas (for the last 25 years). I've worked as high school and college teacher, football and wrestling coach, football player (Texas and Germany), photographer, musician, non-profit organization director, as the first Director of Environmental Justice and Tribal Affairs for EPA's office in Dallas, and as the Director of International Indigenous and American Indian Initiatives at the University of North Texas (the first of its kind in the state), and as a Research Professor specializing in Indigenous issues in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Texas. We got hit hard by the recession and lost both job and home. We moved to the south Texas border where I worked as the Superintendent of Tribal Education Programs for the Kickapoo Tribe and started a language preservation program. In 2018 I returned to Federal service as an Immigration Services Officer in San Francisco where I interviewed applicants for green cards and citizenship. I also initiated a project with the Mayan immigrant community in Oakland. In 2020 I retired and we moved back to our home on the Texas-Mexico border. I curre...Expand for more
ntly volunteer with a non-profit that works with Indigenous immigrants. We are pretty remote with no access to water on our place, so every two weeks we drive 25 miles to town, fill a tank on a trailer, and transfer it to our tank at the house. It really makes us appreciate our water!
My wife, Rosario, was born in Mexico of Huastec and Zapotec descent. She is the only staff member at our local Post Office, which is open two hours/day, six days a week. This area was hit especially hard with Covid, and my best friend on the reservation here is still struggling with the long-term effects.
I have a BA in History, an MA in (cross-cultural) Communications and a Ph.D. that focused on identity issues in the American Indian community. I've worked with many Tribes and Pueblos in Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, and with indigenous communities in Siberia, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Australia and South Africa.
I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation (Oklahoma) and spend a lot of time there (and with other tribes) at powwows and other cultural ceremonies. Most of my international travel related in some way to medical, social justice, environmental and/or human rights issues. I took some students to Native communities and universities in Siberia.
