Jonathan's Story
Like others of you I have certain fond memories of school. In particular Oak Bay in Victoria, the large Art rooms in his basement domain and working on the school newspaper. I remember too the furore about boys with "long hair" who refused to get it cut on ideological grounds. I too was reprimanded by the principal for this although my hair wasn't intentionally long at all. I just forgot to go to the barber and probably had better uses for the money.
Many long years have passed since those school days. . .After a couple of years travelling - Europe, across Canada and then throughout Africa and the Orient, I spent five years at the University of Victoria finishing my degree in English and Classics.
After that I spent a few more years working as a radio officer in the Canadian Coast Guard on the weather ship Ocean Station Papa and studying Electronics Engineering in Liverpool, England.
In 1982 I took my young family to St. Louis, Senegal where I was working for CIDA on a large World Bank project and in 1986 we moved to Melbourne, Australia. I spent nearly nine y...Expand for more
ears in Australia before moving to Thailand to open up a new office for my Australian company.
Other than two to three years working for IBM in London and Shell Oil in Italy, I've been here in Asia now for close to fifteen years. I usually work in China. I'm a freelance specialist in service station retail systems and petroleum transport and distribution.
China is fascinating and I love working with the younger generation there. They are so enthusiastic and intelligent. We spend much time eating huge Chinese meals at big round tables with the food gliding by on a "lazy susan" in the middle. There is a lot of talk, jokes and discussion about everything. This is the first generation in China that can imagine having a truly "global" life experience.
My wife Tukta and I built a big house in the rice fields in a small village across the river from Bangkok. We have two boys, "Thankyou" and "Jame", 16 and 18 respectively. It is heavenly here, with mango trees, bananas, jack fruit, guavas, breadfruit, clouds of bougainvillea surrounded by a sea of irridescent green rice.
