Jonathon D.'s Story

Life I was born November 10 to Nancy Hattie Jackson Mooney and Ruffus Ray Mooney (both deceased). My father passed in 1989 while on the job. My mother just passed in September of 2009 to small cell carcinoma cancer of the lung. She fought a one year battle before she succumbed to the cancer September 25th. My uncle, William, passed away to an accidental choking June 11, 2009. It has not been the best of all years for me along with doing graduate school. However, I have had numerous support from colleagues, classmates, and family members. My aunt,my mom's sister, lives with me now. This has tremendously affected her as they were side by side until the end. My grandmother passed in May of 1996. I am 31 years old and live outside of Ripley. I graduated from Ripley High School in 1997 and went to college in 2000. I have a MicroComputer Support Specialty diploma from the Tennessee Technology Center at Ripley, an Associate of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Dyersburg State, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Memphis, and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership at Trevecca Nazarene University. I have a pet, a Miniature Doberman Pinscher. I substitute taught in the Lauderdale County school system during my semester breaks. I do have my own web page and actually do design as a hobby and I like to advise and assist computer owners and how to maintain their computers when I get spare time. I am a 5th-year teacher at Crestview Middle School, in Tipton Co. Tennessee teaching computer skills. School I guess what I miss about the high school was working in the office technology classes. I enjoyed typing a lot in the technology classes and learning computer skills. The typing skills helped me as I type faster today. I do have favorite teachers though. I miss Ms. S. Jones, my biology teacher, Ms. M. Sargent, my junior English teacher, Ms. J. Jones, my homeroom, office technology teacher, and Ms. M. Boyd, my nursing teacher. I miss going outside for extracurricular activities especially during Homecoming. If I remember my senior year, we did not have a homecoming which was a drag. That was the past. Must move on. A lot of changes have taken place though if you go back to visit RHS. Lots of changes. College I have an Associate of Science Degree in Elementary Education to which I could get a job in the school system if one was opened, but only as an Educational Assistant. The county school system I live in now is required to my understanding to have an associates degree in education in order to keep their job. I am an alumni member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society with the home chapter of Alpha Epsilon Alpha at Dyersburg State. I am also an alumni member of the college. I ...Expand for more
have been on Dean's Lists and Honor Rolls. I have volunteered through mentoring and fundraising and assisting in setting up events. I created the chapter website of PTK. Visit Dyersburg State online and you can find it in the Academics web page under Student Organizations. Visit it sometime. I miss some professors at DSCC: Dr. Dave Strong, one who pushed me to get me where I am today; Dr. Kay Patterson, for her talking to me in good and bad times; Ms. Sara Wolfe, my Spanish 1 and 2 teacher who taught me how to speak Spanish and helped me overcome my fear of the foreign language; and Ms. Jane Theiling, her enthusiasm of mathematics. If there ever was a teacher you needed math help, she was there to help. I recommend anyone to her for math classes. Now, I have my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education to teach elementary level grades, preference 3rd or 4th, if my most favorite area to teach, computer, did not come open. My major preference is to teach Computer Skills to kids. I graduated May 7th, 2005 at The FedEx Forum. I recently found out that with my college course work, I am highly qualified to teach Reading/Language Arts for K-8. In 2005, I got my first teaching position at Crestview Middle School a computer lab teacher, my dream. It is now 2008 and I am in my fourth year of teaching as a tenured teacher. I started back to school Saturday, October 11th, to start my major in graduate school for educational leadership. I have taken my Miller's Analogy Test. Doctorate, I don't know what that might be in. That is too soon to tell.:-) I think that how I have changed from high school to now would be the surprise for everyone at a high school reunion. The wildest thing I ever did in school (high school actually) was to actually go to prison. No I didn't get convicted. It was a trip that our Criminal Justice 1 class took one day. Let's say there are some very very freaky weirdos in prison. My first crush is happily married with children. I am happy for her. To be truley happy, I would be living in my own house, close to my job, doing technology related jobs but do go on vacations too once in a while. If I had one do-over, it would have been to have gone in to college right after high school and not took a long break before I decided to go to college. Workplace Work experiences include: Computer Technology Teacher in the Tipton County School System- 2005 to current. Substitute Teacher- March of 1999 to 2005. Educational Assistant in Special Education Lauderdale County School System, August 1999- May 2000 Computer Sales for Accents Gift Shop, March 1999 to May 2000 (Temporary Employment) Computer Lab Assistant at Dyersburg State Community College, Fall 2001 to Spring 2002. Teaching adults computer on the side in spare time.
