Jose's Story

Been a minute since i have seen my classmates. After doing an 11 year stint in prison i have my own business. Been a diesel mechanic for sometime now working on heavy equipment. Started bodybuilding Jan 10 2017. It's been four awesome years of seeing the body grow......i love it. Enjoy my time with my wife Mari and son Jace. Oldest son Joey doing his thing. Been blessed with our two boys. Both are bad ass musicians and gentlemen. I have enjoyed playing music and recording music with them. Life has been good even though things were difficult at first but the good thing is.........we hitting on all cylinders and doing well. Love you guys.......how can i ever forget ya'll? Sometimes life gets real busy and we forget to reach out to others that you have grown up with. I can truly say that i have missed you guys. Back in May of 2009 i had a tractor trailer dump truck fall on top of me and it messed me up pretty bad. The accident caused my pelvis to be broken in 9 places. Broke my tailbone in half and ruptured two of my vertebra. I was confined to wheel chair. I reached the scales at 315 lbs. I was in bad shape. After coming home and being confined to the "chair" was really awkward for me but there i would learn a very valuable lesson that has enriched my life. Ever since the accident took place i made myself a promise..........to never look back at what seems to be a defeat and to always push hard no matter what. Six months later i began to walk. I had to relearn how to walk.........an awesome challenge. Music for our family (on both sides) was always playing in our homes and it runs deep in our family. From the youngest to the oldest somebody plays some kinda instrument or sings or harmonizes well. I have played in several bands made a lot of good brothers and sisters in music. Have sang in front of many as well as to myself in an 8 by 6 prison cell but have had a blast entertaining others. Music runs through our veins and it'll always be in our lives. March 22 of this year had the opportunity to record two new singles. "Solo Tu" "Only You" by the platters and "Pretend you don't see her my heart." In Spainish "Pretende" by Jerry Vale in the movie Goodfellas. I translated all the lyrics and i own the rights to "Pretende". I have been blessed to jam out with some of the best and record with some of the best. Overall i can't complain because life has been good to me. When i was at the Bill Clements Unit in Amarillo i was assigned to the kitchen. There in the kitchen i was assigned to the butcher shop which came with benefits of learning a lot about meats. How to cut them, cure them ......and so on. When it came to learning "Big Bertha" . She was a full blown reverse flow smoker that could hold 46 briskets at one time. There i would learn to perfect my skills in the bbq world. I learned so much in the time i was there. The things i have learned have allowed me to expand our smoked bbq meats all over the map. We smoke the best briskets that you can eat. We smoked "Dinosaur" ribs (beef short ribs) and whole 35-50 lb whole pigs. The juiciest you have ever eaten. An experience you are not going to ever forget. We smoke it all at Smokin Locos. The time that i spent in prison was a blessing to me because there i was allowed to become me. It was there i learned "me". To be able to sit there and smoke meats for hours and hours is a complete joy to my heart. Many don't know the work involved in good ol' fashion smoked bbq. A lot of work is involved when it comes to smoking delicious juicy brisket, beef short ribs, whole 40-50 lb piglets that come out amazing. We either smoke them whole or roast them. Either way is a hell of an experience you will never forget. We have taken old, old recipes that were given to us by our elders to be given and passed down through out all our generations. Cooking skills that others know nothing of we use on a weekly basis to cater to others that are looking for the best smoked bbq around. We take a lot of pride in what we do. We baby our meats through out the whole cook. Our meats are basted with mouth watering spices in special made broths that only amplify the taste in the mouth. Bodybuilding.......of you see our photos you will see me where i am lying on a hospital bed in a yellow gown. A tractor trailer dump fell on me while i was working on it. The tire man never notified me that he had aired up the truck. Long story short, when a tractor trailer runs out of air......it will move regardless. The thing fell on me breaking my pelvis in 9 places. Braking my tailbone in half and rupturing two of the most important vertabra in our spinal chord. I was confined to a wheelchair and this would really agitate me and aggravate me. I couldn't walk. I made myself a promise that the day i could walk i was going to lift weights and body build. I could see my body wasting away quickly. Especially my legs. Dora Roberts was a huge help for me. There i would start lifting and trying t...Expand for more
o put my life back together. Was it tough? Sure as hell was. Here i was, a really hardcore exconvicted felon crying because of the trauma that i was going through. Who doesn't cry? There i would think of walking again. Seeing myself getting healed and walking.......Dr. was blown away at how quickly our body was recovering. As soon as i hit therapy i knew i was in the right place. In 2017 i would challenge myself to see how much i could lift and i squatted 475 lbs. In prison my record was 595 squat, 565 deadlift and a 300 lb bench. A big difference when one is younger. Now, not too intrested in lifting tons of pounds but to lift to sculpt the body. What a an adventure it's been. Now my wife Mari is lifting with me as well and she's a blast. We have a lot of fun together. How I love my wife......all i can truly say is that she is a bad ass Lady. Couldn't have asked for more. I never thought of fixing anything in my life. I really didn't know where i was going in life. Had no real direction and i definitely was not prepared for life all together. I thought life was all about music but how wrong i was. In my worst time of my life......i learned life's greatest lessons. There in prison i would enroll in college and take trade schools. There i took butchering and learned my skill well. I also took automotive and diesel mechanic school and was given a great opportunity to learn how to overhaul heavy equipment. Maintainers, bulldozers, excavators, tractors, tractor trailers, busses. I took everything that i knew to prepare my graduation from Pen State and i prepared well because even my attitude was right. I graduated in 1999 March 24th with a Doctorates in Hard knocks....lol!! I was awarded O.J.T. for 9 years for working on John Deer Tractors, Ford, Case, Kubota.........the list is endless. I took all the education that i could get my hands on. I ran out of time and barely missed my A.A.S. My teachers were bad ass. I owe my success to them.....so thankful. Now, i run my own business. I have been self-employed since i graduated Pen State and i'm enjoying myself and life all together. My wife is a jewel and i love her so much....she helped save me from my own destruction. I'm forever hers and i'm very happy the way life turned out. My life hasn't always been easy......let me share some of my life with you. I was sentenced to thirty years in prison in 1987. The story is too long to share but there was a time when life was rough....i mean rough. I was transferred to the Ferguson Unit in LoveLady Tx. Ferguson Unit is known as the "Gladiator" unit. Why? You will squabble and throw down sooner or later. I wasn't even there a week and there at the outside yard i would get into a fight with Bruce Lees long lost cousin.....haha. This asian guy was so upset because we es whooped them on the basketball court and i was making fun of the sore loser and he quickly got into his karate kid act. He came at me and i nailed him right on the nose. I felt his nose give way, i knew i had broken his nose. I left him on the ground. I turned my back and when i did this asian dude nailed me on back of the head. I quickly turned and out the mexican bees on his butt. He dropped and this time i made sure he was not getting up. I pounded this dude till he was out. Well, we both ended up at the infirmary. Remember i shared that i turned my back? When i did this guy git a hold of my right hand with his mouth. He bit my finger nail off but i put a beating to his ass he will never forget me....lol!! I ended doing seven months at the Ferguson Unit. I was transferred due to school. I would be transferred to the Bill Clements Unit. Here is where hell is. Literally!!!! Bill Clements Unit was full rock n roll wide open in your face gang activity. This place my friends is full of things you'd never imagine. The devil roams free in this place. No weakness. No drawing back. All reverse gears are gone. It's all Alpha male domain. The weak one don't stand a chance. Here i learned that life can be a cold and dark place. A place where everyone is calloused. A place full of hate and prejudice. Here my heart would sink into a state of violence. Four years of hardcore living in a cesspool of life and i was becoming just like it. In 1990 i was transferred to the Bill Clements unit and it was here that i would renounce gang life, knowing well that it could cost me my life. There i would be stabbed 6 times by four members of a rival gang. I gave it all i had and i knew i wasn't going to die because i'm hard headed like that....i woke up in the hospital with a broken hand, six fresh stab wounds that came in the front and exited my back. I sent two of them to the hospital with me. There we would remain for two weeks. When i came out i would totally change my life. I did a full turn. I renounced prison gangs once and for all and started walking upright. Was it easy? By no means but life has been a whole lot better with out all the unnecessary crap.
