In Sept 67, the 1/6 Inf, was assigned to the new 198th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. I was in Co B, 1st Platoon and I was a Medical Specialist. We were the first element of the 198th to arrive in Nam Oct 67, after a 23 day trip across the Pacific aboard the USNS Upsur. Our assignment was in the area of the Batangan Peninsula, guarding the 17,000 strong installation at Chu Lai, which housed the Americal Div HQ. Most of our missions were in and around Chu Lai, Duc Pho, Tam Ky, Quang Ngai, Bihn Son, LZ's Gator & Baldy, Highway 1. Just after the Tet Offensive, our unit won a Valorous Unit Citation for its victory at the battle of Lo Giang, (2/8/68), near Danang, ag...Expand for more
ainst 300 NVA/100 VC. I was awarded the Purple Heart. Two weeks later,(2/21/68), I was wounded by machine gun fire and made it back to "The World" in one piece with a second Purple Heart. I spent nine months at Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville,PA. (Mar -Dec 68)and received an Honorable Discharge 12/10/68. My best memory is of the camaraderie amongst the men of THE BRAVE & BOLD 198th LIB. Getting a letter from a young member of my platoon, who I patched up and evacuated at Lo Giang, made the whole experience worthwhile. I would like to extend my own personal heartfelt thanks to all Veterans. I hope you get the respect you deserve. I'm proud to be an American and proud to have served in Vietnam. All veterans gave some and some gave all. We know that freedom isn't free. Welcome Home to all who made it back and Godspeed to those who gave all. We will never forget them. God bless them all, God bless the BRAVE & BOLD of the 198th and GOD BLESS AMERICA.
