Joe's Story
Life
I live in Stafford, Virginia which is a suburb of Washington, DC. I work for EPA as an Information Technology Specialist. I write documentation for a computer system that tracks violations at drinking water facilities and do some web development work and am involved in civil rights. I have lived here since 1987 but would like to move back to the Atlanta area in the future, probably when I retire. I would love to hear from some of my classmates and find out how you're doing.
The past couple of years have provided some real life challenges for me. If you remember at the 30 year reunion I was walking with a cane. It turns out that the bones in my foot deformed as a result of complications of diabetes. In July 2006 I developed an ulcer on the bottom of my foot and the doctor put me in a cast which I had for 18 months. In Feb. 2008 the ulcer got...Expand for more
infected and I had to have my left leg amputated below the knee and I ended up in a wheelchair. Then, in Sept. 2008 my older brother passed away suddenly from a heart attack. That was more devastating than my amputation.
But things are much better now. In Feb. 2009 I finally was approved to receive a prosthesis so I am out of my wheelchair and walking again. I have progressed to the point where I am just using a cane to help with my balance and soon I will be able to get rid of that. I am determined to get back to walking without assistance and being independent again. I have joined a gym and am working to improve my strength, endurance and stamina. I am almost back to my old self and in a few months you won't be able to tell I had an amputation. All my friends and co-workers tell me how much better I look and I have a lot more energy now.
