Joseph's Story

After high school, I attended Worcester State College. Soon afterwards, I enlisted in the US Army. I was assigned to the infantry and stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Next, I was stationed on the Korea DMZ. After being promoted to sergeant and meeting this requirement for special forces, I became a paratrooper and a special forces soldier for the next twenty years. I served with the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C, served twice with the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Devens, Mass., and once with the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Bad Tolz, Germany. I served on Special Forces scout swimmer/recon teams and winter warfare/ski teams. I skied for ten years in Mass., Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Norway, Germany, Austria, and Yugoslavia. I lived in Bad Tolz, Germany at Flint Kaserne and I trained/skied in the Bavarian Alps for three years. I was a special forces weapons sergeant, a special forces communications sergeant, a special forces intelligence sergeant, and a special forces team sergeant. I was also a special forces instructor at the Special Forces School at Fort Bragg, NC. I graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Ca. where I studied German. Also, I graduated from Infantry Training, Airborne School, Special Forces Weapons Qualifications Course, Special Forces Morse Code/Radio Communications Qualification Course, Special Forces Operations and Intelligence School, Special Forces Operations Training, Sniper School, Jumpmaster School, Smoke Jumping School, German Airborne School, German Special Operations Training, German Intelligence School, Norwegian and German Ski Schools, Special Forces Ski Instructor Course, Coast Guard Scout Swimmer Course, Danish Scout Swimmer School, Korean Ranger Course, and many other U,S, Army and foreign schools. yed to numerous locations around the world. I worked for the United Nations and the Joint Special Operations Command (Europe) for a period of time. During my service, I earned a business degree from the University of Maryland. I retired with the rank of master sergeant in 1995 at Fort Bragg, NC. After retiring from the military, I earned a bachelor and graduate degree in elementary education from Fayetteville State University. I taught fourth and fifth grade for eighteen years and I retired from the Cumberland County School System in 2013. Also, I coached youth basketball and baseball. My wife, Melissa, was a technology teacher for over twenty five years and retired in 2018. We have been married for over forty years and we have three grandchildren. My daughter served with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg and she did one tour in Afghanistan. My son was assigned to the 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions. He served five combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. My son was wounded twice in Afghanistan and we were very fortunate to get him back. My granddaughter Autumn is in the Army ROTC and she just earned her 2nd Degree black belt in TKD. I'm playing a lot of golf in the Fort Bragg/Pinehurst and Myrtle Beach areas. I played in the Carolina Senior Tour and the Golfweek Tour for a couple of years. Also, I played numerous times in the Military Retiree and World Am tournaments in Myrtle Beach. I won the Fort Bragg Ryder Golf Club Championship in 2014 and the Fort Bragg Stryker Club Championship in 2016. In 2021, and 2022, I won both Senior Club Championships at Fort Bragg’s Ryder and Stryker golf courses. Currently, I'm playing a lot of golf tournaments and I'm teaching my grandson the game of golf. It's been an exciting journey, but now it's time to play golf. Fore! De Oppresso Liber! Never forget our Fallen Soldiers and our Wounded Warriors!!
