Josephine's Story
Excerpt from my published bio
I have two wonderful daughters, three grand-children, and seven great-grands. I earned an Associate Arts Degree in Early Child Development, a Bachelor Degree in Child Development and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development. I was an Elementary School teacher with the San Juan Unified, and Robla School Districts. During my 35 year career, I taught preschool to 5th grade, served as an English-as-a-Second Language Curriculum Specialist and a Language Development Specialist.
When I was 43 years old, I dropped everything and join the Peace Crop. I served two years teaching at a Teachers Training College in Rundu, Namibia, AFRICA. Later, after returning to Sacramento, I was awarded two Fulbright Scholarships to the African countries, Tanzania, in 1997 and Ghana, in 2001. After retirement, I became the CEO of the non-profit, Building Empowerment Skills Today, known as B.E.S.T. This program recruits youth from the Oak Park area to help Oak Park residents improve the façade of their homes. BEST is a three-week, summer youth development program, paying the youth and project managers, a stipend to complete the project for the residents. I spend much of my retirement time managing the fundraising AND other facets of B.E.S.T., plus attending the different community meetings that support BEST.
In addition, I am involved in Black Child Development Institute, (BCDI) of Sacramento, a community organization that host city wide conferences for youth on self-esteem and college preparedness. Furthermore, I am actively involved in my grands and greats, my church, book club and exercise classes. Most of all I love gardening and try to eat off my land as much as possible.
Whew……, I am BUSY!
