Joy Anne's Story

Life I am currently living in San Antonio, Texas. I just bought a house and we're having the fun of reorganizing everything. One of the challenges of military life is the constant moving. As soon as we get settled somewhere, we move and have to pack and unpack all over again! I have three children. My oldest daughter is a senior, my younger daughter is in 8th grade, and my son is in 3rd grade. We have a new kitten in the house, also. I enjoy running, reading, going to the movies, dancing, going out with friends, listening to music, and taking trips with my kids. I love to travel and have been to Mexico, Spain, Portugal, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Peru, St Thomas, St Maarten, and the Philippines. School Oh, I would absolutely hate to be in high school again. However, if I had to, I guess I would try to get more involved socially with school activities and people. I never went to school dances or after school activities. I never even went to the prom! I didn't have a boyfriend in high school. I was a typical geek: too busy reading or studying to be dating. To match that geekiness, I was in the band my freshman year, but I hated it. I did actually enjoy calculus, chemistry, and physics, so I guess I had a good bit of nerd in me, too. My favorite classes were English and Composition with Mr. Criger. He was the first teacher to ever make me feel like I was really good at something. I hated English before I took a class with him, but afterwards, it became my favorite subject. My most memorable moments in high school were from the Spanish Club field trip to Spain and Portugal in 1981. I guess I caught the travel bug on that trip, because I have traveled to a lot of countries since then. I used to spend my time after school hanging out with my friend Nikki or riding motorcycles with Sandy and her friends. College I have gone to several colleges, but I consider the University of Arizona to be my alma mater. The Wildcats will always be my team. My most memorable moment in college was when I was a first year medical student and I went into labor in Anatomy lab. My water broke and soaked through my scrub pants...Expand for more
, but we had so much formaldehyde on our lab coats and the floor that no one could tell. My favorite part of medical school was the CUP clinic. Not only was it a lot of fun, but I also learned primary care and Spanish-speaking skills that served me well during my residency in California and later working in Peru. During medical school, I hung out most of the time with Dianna Williams, Troy Manchester, Rebecca Goldman Rawnsley, and Heather Earick. However, since I had two little girls at home, I was usually too busy to go out with everyone after class. Gee, it sounds like my life hasn't changed too much - I'm still really busy all the time! Workplace I am a Family Physician currently on active duty in the Air Force, but I'll be separating and going into civilian practice in November. I have been stationed in Texas, Maryland, and the United Kingdom. I was also deployed to Kyrgyzstan. I completed a Master's of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine and did research and field training in Peru for the summer as part of that degree. I also completed a second residency in General Preventive Medicine, but Family Medicine remains my favorite field. Military I have been stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, at RAF Lakenheath in England, at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland, and then at Brooks City-Base in Texas. I met some fantastic people at "Lakenhell". I was so busy all the time over there and the people running the show used to drive me crazy. I think my morning runs with KJ and having Sharon around to keep things in perspective for me are the main things that got me through the insanity. It helped that I had some great techs to work with, too, especially Kim Hollowell and Andy Schmitt. While I was at Lakenhell, I deployed to Kyrgyzstan during their Tulip revolution in 2005. That was certainly... interesting! The people I worked with there were great, too. I was lucky that Schmitty and Bedrick were there, too, because they were both great. I love doing humanitarian work, like when we worked at the orphanages in Bishkek, but I hate being separated from my kids. So, even though there are a lot of opportunities, I try not to get too many assignments away from home.
