Joyce's Story
Life
After high school, I went to Pittsburg State and graduated with a Bachelor's in Education (to teach high school English). I never ended up teaching but the college degree did open a few doors along the way. I have also completed a number of post graduate and graduate level hours. I've worked in healthcare since high school, primarily in Utilization Review and Quality Improvement. I'm currently in my 11th year with Kansas Foundation for Medical Care (KFMC) which is the Peer Review Organization for the State of Kansas. KFMC has contracts with both the Federal and State Government to perform peer review on Medicare and Medicaid cases. Currently, I am the Review Coordinator for Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. I also assist in the review activities for other hospitals throughout the State of Kansas. I have been married for 23 years to Steve Medved and we have two really great daughters--Kelly(19) and Kristyn(17). Of course, they are both smart(National Honor Society) and beautiful!! Kelly is attending Wichita State University and Kristyn has been accepted to start at WSU in the Fall of 2002. Steve is a Computer Consultant. For the past few years, he has contracted with Tricon Global Restaurant Services (Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell). As a family, we have been quite active in church activities. I play the Clavinova (keyboard) for our church's Worship Team. Steve and I both hold Leadership positions and the girls are also active in Youth Leadership and activities. We have lived in Wichita since 1987. Our plan is to move to the Kansas City area in the next couple of years. We have a lot of family in the Kansas City area. We would also be much closer to Fort Scott, where my Dad and sister still live. I'd love to hear from you. Just thought I'd throw in an update. My husband Steve and I moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 2003. Steve changed from contractor status to a company position with YUM Brands(formerly Tricon)in Louisville. One thing we learned right away---you can't live in this part of the country and not be a fan of college basketball!!!Our youngest daughter, Kristyn, came with us and is in the Nursing program at the University of Louisville. ee in Criminal Justice. I took some time off from work after our move which worked out well. It allowed me to be free to travel back and forth to Kansas to be with my Dad during some health situations (broken knee, heart attack, Coronary Bypass/Valve Replacement surgery). I finally went back to work in April of 2005 with a staffing company called Kforce out of Tampa, Florida. So now I'm traveling, doing some Health Information Consulting as a Certified Coding Specialist. Since I'm out traveling, won't be able to make the FSHS Reunion festivities. Hope you all have fun!
2/26/09 Update
Steve and I are still in Louisville, KY and married for 30 years now. Steve is still with YUM Brands despite a series of layoffs and reorganization. The highlight of his year in 2008 was working the Ryder Cup Tournament at Valhalla Golf and Country Club. At least I got an autograph from Sergio! As for me -- after a few months of traveling full time as a Coding Consultant during 2005, I decided I preferred living at home and not out of a suitcase. Had a great time traveling, learned how to get a free 1st Class seat on a plane, became familiar with various airports and flight schedules and the games the airlines play, learned that if a room rate sounds too good to be true -- it is, made some great friends all over the country, and I loved LA (Steve thinks I'm crazy!). Anyway, I went to work for Jewish Hospital in Louisville as a Quality Reviewer in September 2005. For any of you who speak the healthcare language, I do abstractions for Core Measures. In addition, I serve on Service Line Teams for the Cardiovascular and Surgical sections.
Kelly, our oldest daughter, was married in Wichita, KS on 7/8/06 to Tim Richardson. After a year living in Florida, they moved to Louisville in 2007, bought a house, and both currently work as Assistant Managers with Walgreens. Kelly graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wichita State University with a degree in Criminal Justice. She's working toward a position in that field. Kristyn, our youngest daughter, received her Bachelors in Nursing in May of 2007. She is working in the Oncology Intensive Care Unit of Norton Healthcare in downtown Louisville. She should complete her Certification for administering Chemotherapy in the next couple of weeks. Kristyn and her husband, John Clark, were married 8/2/08 in Louisville. They live in Shelbyville, KY. So far, between the two daughters, we have 5 grandpuppies and no grandchildren.
