Joyce's Story

Life People who know me say that I am a survivor. I would surely like to think of myself as more than that, but it is definitely true. I left a horrible family life after my first marraige at the age of 16 and lived in Iceland for a year and then Virginia. Became a full blown alcoholic by age 22 and nearly died. Anorexic down to 82 lb., I "got sober" in 1979 and stayed that way for 15 yr. before my first relapse that occurred after I ESCAPED from my second husband. From that point on I had several relapses, none which lasted very long, but caused much damage. During my worst relapse I managed to destroy my closest and most precious friendship with my lifelong friend, Carol. If you ever read this Carol, I am so sorry and understand why you have chosen to detach. I have fought my way back again to a sober, but lonely life. I have no contact with any of my "family" since my brother Wayne committed suicide. They are too toxic. So, yes, I am a survivor, but I'm also much more than that! I am the founder of an agency called P.A.A.C.A.Inc., a resource and referral agency fighting addiction and successful in aiding...Expand for more
thousands of addicts, prospective addicts and their family and friends. I have also been able to touch many, many people in my life and helped them to overcome their demons. Now, I want only peace. School I would never want to go through elementary or middle school again! It was a horrifying experience. My parents didn't take care of me and I always looked like I crawled out of a trailer park run by hogs! I was one of those kids that everybody else picked on. Plus I went to a lot of different schools so I never really made good schoolfriends, and those who were my friends I figured they felt sorry for me. I best remember Cathy Delaney's BDay party at Lincoln Park roller rink, as I broke my arm! I loved to hear her sister, Michele, play the piano, and her Mom was my Girl Scout leader. I always felt like odd-man-out. Wendy Amaral was my best friend at home and Carol at my grandparents. Mr. Cardoza was my favorite teacher. The civil-rights movement was in full force and frightened me. After the riots in 69 I was too afraid to go to N.B. High and left school at age 15. I didn't return until I was 32yr. old.
