Joyce's Story
I went to Good Shepherd in around July of 1965. I don't remember the name of my house, but Mother Bernadette was the Nun that supervised it. I was there because I was unable to live with my family for many issues. Some of problems were mine and some were my parents. But I responded to situations by just running away. I thought that the school was really good. I was a good student. I completed high school while there in only three years. I believe their programs at the time were state of art and new progressive learning environments. We had video learning that taught us cooking and we prepared our own meals. I found some of my report cards recently and it looks like we took only two classes at a time for 3 hours a day each, one in the a.m. and one after lunch. They lasted six or eight weeks and we received like a years credit for the course. We wore uniforms. I was catholic so I...Expand for more
was in a catholic cottage. Some of the teachers I remember are: Mr. Don Sachs, (History/Social Studies), Miss Huish (Chemistry), Sister/Mother Madonna, (English).. The Nun that was in charge of the school was Sister Bernadine. There was a very sweet administrative nun whose name was Sister/Mother Terez. I went to transition in Tucson in May of 1966 and started right in at the U of A. I was only 16 at the time and it was difficult going to college at that age, and having just lived in a convent school of girls for 1 and 1/2 years. There were no pregnant girls at Good Shepherd. If someone got pg on a home visit, they ended of being sent some where else. The same was true for persons with mental issues. Overall my experience at the school was very good for me. I needed that structure at that time in my life. I kept in touch with Don Sachs for many years until he passed away.
