Joyce's Story

School I attended Eliot Elementary KG through 4th grade (1959-1963) Part of that time I lived on 20th Street across from The National Food Store. We later moved on farther down 20th just past the corner of Newhouse. My teachers were Miss Wernle KG, Ms. Schwink 1st, Ms. Munch 2nd, Ms. Muffler 3rd, Miss Mull 4th. What I remember about Eliot the most is when we had our school parade.... walking out in the middle of the street. The parade was always fun. I remember the bugle boys, (both my brothers were one), and the batan twirlers. Then we had the fun of going to the picnic at Chain of Rocks. We had many picnics there. I loved the riding spook house, even though I was afraid of it, I rode through it many times. And I also liked the walk through spook house, (I think that's what we called them back then.) I remember walking over the dead body,(which I think was just a mattress.)It was soooo scarey back then, but so much fun. Can you imagine if they were still here today, exactly the same, how silly they would be. At Eliot I also remember at recess how the boys played on one side of the school yard and the girls played on the other side. I was really sad when the school boundaries changed and I was no longer considered to be in Eliot School distr...Expand for more
ict. I had to now attend Clay Elementary beginning there at 5th grade. I attended Clay Elementary from 5th grade through 8th grade (64-68). My teachers were Mrs.Grunewald 5th, Mrs. O'Leary 6th, Mr. Breite 7th, and of course Mrs. McCarthy 8th grade. I don't know who I would pick as my favorite teacher because I really liked them all. I have special memories from each class about someone or something that happened there. I would have to say I think I had the most fun in Mr. Breites room. He was the first male teacher I ever had. He was nice looking and always smelled good. I think some of us girls had a crush on him (if they would admit it.) I remember there was alot of joking around and pranking going on in that room, and it seemed like almost everyone had their turn at it. I also remember when I found out that I would be in Mrs. Mcarthy's room the next year I cried, really. I was afraid of her, as I think a lot of others were. But, as I later found out if you were in her class, she really wasn't that scarey. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Danny Taylor. I remember him like yesterday. In school we always had alot of fun together and I always liked him. He was never at a loss for words and forever made me laugh.
