Joyce's Story

Life Married to Klaus Schmidt (1978). I have 2 children, who are my world and my life. My daughter, Leni (DOB 7/85) is making me a grandmother in Dec. 2011. My son, Keaton (DOB 12/89) is working on his mechanics license. I am also an animal lover! I have a puggle, Zoe and 2 shepherd/hound mix - Iya and Hoover. School As a 1971 graduate of Admiral King High School, my biggest crush was on Gary Pope....since the 7th grade. Yep, I did marry him - but we were divorced after 2 1/2 years. No regrets...just friends. College After 25 years as a medical transcriber, secretary, and then a substitute teacher, I went back to school - UGA in Athens, GA. Received my Ed.S. in School Counseling, Kappa Delta Pi Society. I'm also a National Certified Counselor/School Counselor. Workplace I've been working at Cedar Hill Elementary for the past 11 years and I LOVE MY JOB! I've always loved being around children. School Counselors here in Gwinnett Co. do not have your "typical" school counselor role. We do follow the ASCA model, and all our programs support the "No Child Left Behind Act". mic achievement, and we use pre-post data for EVERYTHING we do to show our governor, parents, teachers, and the community that what we do DOES make a difference in lowering discipline referrals, increasing academic achievement, increasing state-wide test scores and increasing daily on-time attendance. We utilize Kinder and Filial (play) intervention - have our own play room! Our teachers and parents also have the option of being trained/coached in filial (play) intervention. We also support/teach/coach our teachers in classroom management and classroom meetings & 2nd Step Programs. We offer parent education in Discipline with Love & Logic, 1-2-3 Magic, and family meetings to help our families/students to have a better home environment with respect, responsibility and the sense of belonging being the "key" components. If anyone out there is a school counselor, email me for a more in-depth overview of our guidance program and I guarantee they will NEVER use you as a "special" to give teachers "planning time" or see you as "fluff" again. You will be seen as an important part of closing the achievement gap and that you play a vital role in the school community.
