Joyce's Story
In just about a week, I will be celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary with the best guy on the planet!
I have four extraordinary kids, three boys and one girl. I have five grand kids, and they are all so unique and precious!
I've lived in California all my life. I live near the beach, play keys, guitar and hand drums. Have lots of gatherings with music, poetry, art, food and friends.
The era I probably identify with most is the '60 because there was hope that something better was on the horizon. Important concepts of 'peace' and 'love', 'equality' and 'change' were on everyone's lips. I hope that I've carried some of this with me in my life.
My heart will always belong to the Los Angeles inner city where I was born and raised and to the many childhood friends and acquaintances that cause me to see life as I do.
Tenth Street Elementary School...then my name was Joyce Stirewalt. Things I remember are some great teachers, very caring and committed...the cafeteria with 25 cent lunches...Expand for more
...not all could afford...but the best was the smell that came from that kitchen on rainy days when we would get these amazing chocolate cookies and hot cocoa. I am known as a great cook, but I still cannot duplicate these!
and the Red Shield... what a great place! most of us had very little, but these guys made a safe place to socialize play games, join clubs, learn to dance, cook, and even pray.
Other things I remember...buying penny candies...hot summer days and nights...making do with little or nothing and feeling like we had it all!
Many of my friends were displaced from their homes making way for the Los Angeles Convention Center. Some moved nearby and went to the local junior and senior highs. Others, like me, moved away to other areas or states.
So while others appear in year books, and find it easy to reconnect with old friends, I am one of the ones that slipped through... having attended a few junior and senior highs, but actually receiving my diploma from night school.
