Joyce's Story
Life
I entered nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Nampa (now Mercy Medical Center) directly out of NHS. I married Mel from Kirkland, WA in 1969. He was serving in the US Navy at the time. We were able to remain state side for nearly 2 yrs.. Our 1st daughter, Vonnie, was born during that time. When Mel was shipped to Nam on an Aircraft Carrier I returned to Nampa with Vonnie. Mel finished his 4 yrs. of active duty in 1972 and return to Nampa to farm with my father. Our 2nd daughter, Ruth, was born in Nampa in 1973. Later I returned to work at Mercy Medical Center then worked for R.C. Olding MD OBGYN for 3 yrs. then returned to Mercy. My father died unexpectedly in 1983. In 1984 I decided to stayed home to help on the farm and raise the girls. They both attended and graduated from Kuna Schools where they were very involved in sports and leadership. While the girls were in HS I got involved with the Lifeline Pregnancy Care Center in Nampa was assistant director for 2 yrs. and director for nearly 8 yrs. Vonnie graduated from NNC in 1993 and married a Melba native, Rod, the same summer. They both taught and coached in Melba while starting their family. They have given...Expand for more
us 3 beautiful grandkids. After Rod became head football coach in 2002 and took the players all the way to & won the State Championship, he made a career change and has been with the Nampa Police Dept. Vonnie continues with the Melba School District teaching & coaching. Daughter, Ruth, attended BSU for several yrs. for pre-hygiene then married a U of I grad from Star, Brent, in 1994. They moved to Pocatello for Ruth to finish her clinical studies at ISU and graduated in 1996 with a BS. After a move to the Vancouver, WA area for several yrs. and starting their family there, they returned to Nampa. They have given us 2 darling towhead boys. Ruth is a hygienist for a Dr. in Boise and Brent is self employed as owner of an Auto Glass Company replacing windshields and repairing rock chips.
The farms were all sold as my mother's health failed and Mel went to work for the USPS as a rural letter carrier. He delivers to approx. 600 residences - "rural"?
After caring for both Mel's parents & my mother in our home during their terminal illnesses I went to work as a hospice nurse. Other than marriage, children & grandchildren this has been the most rewarding experience of my life.
