Judy's Story
Life
I lived in Inglewood, CA until I was 11 and attended Warren Lane Elem. Lived in Hollywood, CA for jr high (LeConte) and high school (Hollywood High). Graduated from UCSanta Barbara in 1965 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Married Joe Abdo in 1964. Taught in Burbank, CA for 2 years. Lived and taught in Prince Georges County, Maryland in 1968 and then Wichita, Kansas until 1971, when I returned to Hollywood and teaching in Burbank. Joe and I divorced. I moved to Santa Monica in 1974 and became a community activist. In 1977 I began working at the Church in Ocean Park and then the Ocean Park Community Organization. he Santa Monica AIDS Project, the Santa Monica Bay Lesbian and Gay Alliance, and other social service organizations. I worked for the City of West Hollywood during its first 5 years as a city. In 1988 I was elected to the Santa Monica City Council and served as Mayor of Santa Monica in 1991, 93, and 94. I left the council in 1996 and now serve as Santa Monica's representative to the Metropolitan Water District. I am currently very involved in politics in Santa Monica with special interest in affordable housing, environmental issues, and education. I have returned to the world of Education and am Director of Child Development Services for the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District.
