Judy's Story

STORY 1: CEDAR KEY FLORIDA: Attended Cedar Key Baptist Church Cedar Key is today a really awesome resort area. When I was there only a very small area of expensive houses and cottages existed on the far side of the island. I really loved living on the island, although, It was a little frightening when the hurricanes and heavy rains would hit, because we then would get stuck on the island, not being able to leave until the water receded. My Dad would go hunting, bringing all kind of game and foul to our freezer and on our table. He also fished and gathered oysters. I would sometimes go with him and then sit at the fire and eat roasted oysters. It was our bonding time. My Aunt Betty and Uncle Nolan were my Mom and Dad's best friends and we spent a lot of time with them. Aunt Betty made this amazing homemade fudge that I will sell from house to house. In fact, my first princess crowning required that we girls raise a certain amount of money. So Aunt Betty made her fudge for me to sell during the competition. I won my first art contest in this small town. When the tide would go out, it would be so far that you could spend hours walking out the sandbar. My friends and I would ride our bikes or street skate all over the island exploring. We especially liked old abandon houses or structures. We would find arrowheads and other fun artifacts in mounds on the island. We had a HUGE pier at the end of the island that we spent time running around on along with tons of pelicans and other water foul. Our local commercial fisherman would hang at those docks. In fact, we always had fresh seafood, and a local restaurant or two. STORY 2: EVERGLADES FLORIDA: I loved hiking out into the swamps and woods by myself, really, I did, all the time! I played around the canals, looking for the manatee, watching for gators, climbing trees and throwing scraps to the cat fish. I had two cats who loved to hang around the dock and eat the scraps from cleaned fish. I took piano and Alto Clarinet lessons. I attended Everglades Baptish Church...sang in the church choir and participated in drama pieces they had. I practiced on the piano there on weekday afternoons. My father was principal of the school, which was weird...but we lived in the koolest house on a raised foundation just a couple of blocks from the school. I would go out with my father and deliver clothes and other donated items to the Seminole Indian villages. I was also the mascot for the cheerleading team, and could be seen almost every basketball game, I was even given an official uniform, the size for a 3rd and 4th grader! My Dad made the gym a summer hang out for everyone, then redid the floors every fall for the new basketball season. We had some AMAZING talent shows at the school. I was only in second grade, when I did a dance number with the high school girls in my very own go-go boots! My family went on a trip to the Bahamas with the graduating senior class. When we had long hurricanes, we boarded up the house and drove north to stay with family friends, it was like camping inside! Then afterwards, the streets would be flooded and we would run around playing in the water. I thought it was fun! I loved the houses up on stilts and the Florida style of art. We would go to Miami from time to time to shop and look around, and once or twice we drove down to Key West. That long drive over the water is a little scary! This was the city where I received my very first kiss from a boy. :) STORY 3: FT MYERS FLORIDA Attended: First Baptist Church Of Fort Myers (An Historic Baptist Church) 1735 Jackson St Fort Myers, FL 33901 We didn't live far from the beach in Ft Myers. Like most of the large Gulf Coast cities, it had a lot of beauty to offer and many activities. What I remember most about living here was having a million friends who had a million parties, with a pool involved! The Beatles were huge, and played at every party. I was involved in many extra curricular activities, always busy. We were very close to my grandmother and grandfather's home, so we visited a lot of those weekends. Mom worked at the phone company, so I had to babysit my two brothers. We had hamsters and Gerbils. I had tons of barbie dolls and did a lot of play acting with them. My friends and I did a lot of roller skating at the local rink and I tried to play on the girls basketball team but I was so short it made it hard to keep up. I got my first ID bracelet from a boy in this city! STORY 4: Tallahassee, Florida attended: Seminole Baptist Church Dad was working on his Doctorate at FSU. Tallahassee is actually my birth city. When my father began working on his doctorate, we moved back and lived close to campus of Florida State University. I can remember sneaking into a IKE and TINA TURNER CONCERT which was taking place on the football field, and watching from under the bleechers! What a blast! But I ripped my pants on the fence as I was going back over, so my Mom quizzed me. Well, after I told her the story, she actually laughed with me! Living near the FSU campus was definitely an adventure. My cousin, Jan was living in town to go to school, and she let me hang with her while she did her sewing. She was an excellent seamstress and cook and she would let me watch and learn. She taught me a lot of the basics. She eventually became an Art Teacher and married a Landscaper. I loved going over and playing around on the FSU field equipment and walking around campus. In and out of the head shops, the art studios and such. My first serious relationship with a guy was here in this city. A son of one of the professors. The relationship lasted almost three years, but it ended when he decided he was ready for sex and I decided I wasn't. Besides, after my Dad finished his Doctorate, we moved STORY 5: NORTHWESTERN HIGH AND ROCK HILL DAYS: I was in the college prep program, so I had classes with the smarties...some way smarter than me...I was in band and chorus.... I hung out with the football players at band parties...went steady with Danny Wray (a rock n roll drummer)..my nickname was D.J. Campbell....I was a clown...a designated driver known on occasion to get too bad off herself....but I was too busy to get into very much trouble...I was known to skip school from time to time....but I held down two jobs almost always....because I loved clothes and jewelry and hanging with my friends, and my parents would only pay for necessities. My favorite hang out was what use to be "Runts" down by the river...playing pool almost every Friday and/or Saturday night and dancing to the Rock N Roll that played on the jukebox, that is when I wasn't out of town with a band....my parents made me go to church every Sunday no matter what until the day I moved away. I have two brothers, Jimmy and Randy. My best friend from high school, and still in my life.....Brenda Jones who went to Rock Hill High....we use to go to drag races on Sunday and race a Canary Yellow 57 Chevy that Danny and the boys maintained.....we use to run up and down high street with our cars....and cruise HARDEES...anybody remember the Cobra mustang we used to get smoked by? My first job was at the Exxon carwash...a really fun job! STORY 6: JUST ME: I always wanted to be a Rock N Roll Star when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a HORRIBLE idea. As it turns out, they were only half right. My favorite way to relax is to totally get away from people, turn off the phone, dip into the hot tub, watch a movie I've been wanting to see....or go out of town to a secluded, wooded area and rent a cabin, hike and hang out with nature. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have respect, freedom to work, and enough money to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My inspiration comes from people with the courage to make their dreams and goals come true.....whatever they may be. My biggst surprise in life has been the validity of the saying "the more things change, the more they stay the same." My relationship with my son has only reinforced my belief that LOVE is the most important component to a successful and happy life. STORY 7: CHRISTMAS 2009 PART I The day I left Columbus, it was sooooooo cold and of course, I had to be at the airport early. I decided to take two carry on pieces since there had been so many problems of luggage being lost by the airline companies. It did however, turn out to be a real pain because I had to carry them everywhere. But it was best for a short trip, its just that I really didn't have everything I wanted with me on the days that I was there. (I went to the drug store when I got there and picked up the toiletries I needed because certain items bring so many problems with airport security). Airport security is horrible, I dread it every time, and in fact this is only the second time I have flown since 911. I was a little nervous. . My flight from Columbus had me sitting beside a young, well built, strawberry blond cowboy from Kansas City. He grabbed my bags and threw them up into the storage bin, like it was nothing. Then signaled for me to have a seat. I saw him in the terminal, standing all confident and strong. He is the kind of man that makes a girl want to drop to her knees, then when she does, he blushes. The kind of man that makes your mind go crazy with really nasty thoughts.(I know my girls KNOW what I'm talking about). His name was WESTON and he was a boat mechanic, working on yachts and boats owned by our Ohio finest. He had a few freckles and I'm guessing about 25, and dressed very well. YEOW. EH EM, so, my first stop was in Milwaukee and I almost missed getting on the plane because they boarded early, so I didn't get to stop for food. They rushed me on, made us put on our seat belts and then left us to sit on the runway for an hour and a half. It had snowed really bad and they decided the runways needed scraping and the planes deiced, so there we sat. It would hav...Expand for more
e been nice to have some coffee. I'm terrible without my coffee. Then I heard "Glad you could make it" from across the aisle....and it was WESTON. My new seat companion was an older lady going to Kansas City to see her daughter and grandchildren, so all of us did some talking, excited to be seeing family members for Christmas. When we finally took off, I looked back and saw a long line of planes waiting behind us. But, since we took off so late, I figured I was going to miss my connection. What would they do? How would they handle it? GRRRR...... When we arrived at Kansas City (my next stop) they told us that our connection had waited for us. Those with connections, left the plane first, so I said my goodbyes and headed out. But when we got to the gate, one of the attendants escorted us through and said we had to go to customer service because our plane had already left. There were about 15 of us and we looked at each other bewildered, since there was a plane still in the hold next to us, AND we were sure it was ours. So I, being the bold and assertive person I am, went right back up to the gate and started screaming that I was pretty sure that was our plane and we needed to get to it. The attendants responded by herding us back through, BUT, they did a security check AGAIN. Out came the laptop, off came the shoes...blah blah blah...what a pain. It WAS our plane and they DID wait for us. AND they apologized for the attendant that was wrong. The Captain calmly said ¿We have freshly baked chocolate chip cookies for you¿ AND THEY DID! So, I had two chocolate chip cookies and coffee.YAY. It was a three and half hour flight on that last leg....ARRRGGHHHH....and so hard for me to sit that long in the air! We were supposed to get to see the Grand Canyon, but we ran into a storm and had to fly above it. But when we came down and flew through the clouds, WOW, the San Gabriel mountains were right there and they were AMAZING! Very different from the Blue Ridge. These mountains are HUGE, HIGH and snow capped. Such great hues of blue and purple and orange. Really beautiful. Gabriel met me at the airport and the sun was shining and I was too hot in what I had arrived in. We then proceeded to drive the freeway from the airport to the north of L.A. county where they live...YIKE....scary scary freeway! Gabriel navigated it well. I think it would take me awhile to get use to it! It was a rather long drive, but I did get a great overview of the area from the southwest of L.A. over to the northeast side of the county. I saw downtown L.A. from a distance. But L.A. is HUGE. Since the west coast is three hours behind the East coast, I had half a day in front of me yet, woot! When we arrived at the homestead, it was a really nice and comfy apartment. It is in the clean and very pretty area of Sherman Oaks, California. I dumped all my stuff, changed into something cooler and we went over to the Italian restaurant where Sara waitresses part time and had a yummy lunch. After lunch, we stopped in the drug store for those items I needed and didnt bring. After errands and checking in at the apartment, we all went for a drive out on Mulholland. I got to see the entire area on each side of the canyon road.....it was so AWESOME. I saw Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Universal City, downtown L.A., and Burbank. Some incredible homes. All different styles of architecture. Different sizes. Some modest homes mixed in with the bigger homes. Even fancy trailor parks. My eyes were everywhere as Gabe and Sara pointed out the houses they really liked. My camera was on auto pilot as I clicked picture after picture. It was a little chilly up on the canyon road. The weather was much warmer than here, but night was falling, the wind was blowing and the temperature dropped a little, so we headed home for a cup of tea and movie time. PartII: Being across the country in a different time zone didnt seem to matter yesterday, but I woke up at 4:00 in the morning their time! I tried to go back to sleep, but instead lay there and listened to the sound of the freeway. My fascination peaked because I realized the sound had never stopped. Never. There was always vehicles on the freeway. But try as I might, I could not go back to sleep, so I got up and made some coffee and proceeded to have about four cups as the sun slowly rose. It was really warm and I had slept with the window cracked open. As I looked out the kitchen and living room windows, I could see the mountains in the distance, still looking purple with orange splashes. I could see palm trees and tropical plants everywhere. I was so excited to be in California and to get play time with Gabe and Sara that I just wanted to go wake them up, hit pots and pans, anything to get the day started, but Sara actually had to work this morning and I am supposedly an adult. *snicker* So I did sneak in and take a shower while I was waiting. I had brought some recipes with me, thinking we might have to make one big dinner. AND I brought my sugar cookie recipe just in case they wanted to make and decorate Christmas cookies. Sara really loved the idea of making the cookies, so after we dropped her off at work, Gabe and I had to go to the grocery store and shop. I thought we were just getting a few items, but we ended up spending about two hours shopping, along with a stop at Starbucks for me. After we put the groceries away, we headed over to pick Sara up from work. Then she went and worked out and Gabriel and I did some computer time. I was unloading all the pictures I had taken on the canyon drive yesterday. Then when Sara returned, she and I went over to a salon and got a manicure and pedicure. I asked how much more could I pay to get them to keep massaging my legs and feet! Heavenly. Good times. That night, Sara and I made cookie dough while Gabriel organized the kitchen in preparation for our Christmas Eve feast. I started singing a funny verse of the 12 days of Christmas and that started us all on the task of singing the song until we had a new verse for every number! There was much laughter and I believe a videotape. LOL. Christmas Eve Day 2009 - Part III My Christmas Trip We started the day off checking on a couple of really cute dogs that Gabe and Sara were caring for while some of their friends were out of town. We played with them a little, let them do their business in the yard and then locked them safely back in the house. THEN, we headed out to Topanga Canyon where we hiked for a couple of hours. It was so beautiful. When we settled on one of the peaks, Gabe pointed out the Pacific Palisades up on another ridge to the SW of us. It is a very exclusive place to live as I understand. Then, if you look to the west you could see the Pacific Ocean. So pretty. We had a little snack on top of the rock and I took tons of pictures. It was so quiet and peaceful, it was hard to head back down. Sara had to work a little, so I started on the cookies, since we had made dough for 4 dozen. It literally took all afternoon for me to make 2 dozen and get them decorated. I actually ended up with 3 dozen. Not sure how that happened. But they were coming out so nice. The colors and the final look. Gabe was doing a little computer work, then prepping the food for our dinner. When Sara came home, she started in on cookies as well. We could not believe how many cookies we were ending up with. But I do believe she had a blast. She and Gabe took their turn at decorating. I got pictures of them too! Gabe prepared a fabulous looking and very yummy dinner of Salmon glazed with brown sugar and double baked potatoes. I loved it! After dinner, we sang Christmas songs together, and somewhere I think there is a videotape of this as well. I think we then watched the Grinch and/or maybe It¿s a Wonderful Life. I cant remember for sure all the little details. I should¿ve kept a diary. The trip seemed to be flying by. But, it was Christmas Eve. Tomorrow: PRESENTS!!!!!!! Christmas Day 2009 Part IV CHRISTMAS ! ! ! ! Turn all the colored lights on and get ready to open presents! How fun! We started our day off with the infamous Orange Cinnamon buns, yea, you know the ones! What to open first? There were actually quite a few presents under that tree for all of us. Soooooo, we took turns. We made little piles, and we took pictures. Gabriel got Sara a phonograph and had found a great shop that sold albums, so he picked up several vinyl records for her. We set it up and had music playing while we proceeded to finish unwrapping presents! I received some great art supplies, an art book and a portable easel! This is the day we go over to Joey and Vanessa's for a great dinner and social, and I am so excited. Mainly to see Joey and Vanessa but also because it is my understanding that there is much game playing and laughter and I get to share that with Gabriel and Sara and their friends!!!! YAY!!!!! A much needed present for me! Whoo hooo!!!!! So after wrapping clean up, changing of clothes and packing of cookies, we head out first to stop and see two cute little dogs, then one to Joey and Vanessa's house! Ding Dong!!!! Hooray! We are here! Vanessa set up an awesome table, it looked so fabulous! There was a Christmas tree in the front bay window she confessed she had just put up for us. The table was set and waiting! Mike and Alli, two other mutual friends of Joey and Vanessa and Gabriel and Sara had already shown up, and apparently Mike was really psyched for the on coming games! (In fond memory of dinner parties past) I gotta say, although all of the food was really tasty and made to perfection, I distinctly remember Vanessa's sweet potato casserole. YUMMIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. After dinner, the games were on! I was so sore at the end of the night from laughing so hard! It was an amazing time of joy and peace and LOVE!!!!! Not that I intended to end up like a Kincade scene on a card, but hey....call it li
