Judy's Story

Logistics: Where I've been since high school . . . I spent my junior and senior years of high school in England, then returned to earn an August diploma from Magruder. I attended Univ.of Md. for 4 years, then married and moved to Ft. Hood/Killeen, TX. I earned my bachelor's degree and teaching credential from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor and started teaching in Killeen I.S.D. I divorced in '85 and started taking college classes for fun, learned to 2-step and ride horses. I earned my M.S.Ed from Texas A&M in curriculum and instruction, focusing in elementary science education. I taught 3rd & 5th grades & became campus technologist, spending 12 years in KISD. I also spent several summers leading tours of the Galapagos Islands. While visiting my sister in LaPaz, Bolivia in July, 1996, I met and fell in love with my soulmate and the love of my life, John Weiskopf. He is a writer (novel: The Ascendancy), a cyclist, and an avid fisherman, and currently teaches at American University. I married John in December, 1997 in Frederick, MD, then moved to Santa Monica, CA. I have 2 wonderful step-children: daughter 34, lives in Manhattan and works at Harper's Bazaar, and son 23, who spent 3 years in the U.S. Army, (ironically stationed at Ft. Hood) and now lives in Houston with his wife. In Santa Monica, I taught science at an independent elementary school in the west Los Angeles area for 14 years. Where I am now . . . land. Everyone in both John's family and my family lives in Maryland, and it has been great to be back near family again, and to be around for all of the family celebrations. My parents are still living in the same house in Derwood, and in Oct. last year we moved into the house next door to them. I am currently in a 1-year in a long-term substitute job, teaching 7th and 8th grade math at an independent school in Potomac. Prior to that I spent 2 years supervising student teachers at American University. Although I loved it, it was only part time. Since my current job is about to come to an end, so I am once again job hunting (April 2016) and looking for my next professional adventure. I love being back in an independent school, and I love the contact with the students, but I think my strength lies in supervising / helping teachers (and pre-service teachers) grow as well as community building. John and I like to spend time with our four cats, garden, spend time outdoors (fishing for him, walking, hiking, and running for me) and explore new places. We spend a lot of time with family - his mother is 94 and my father is disabled, so we help out as much as we can. Philosophy: Above all, I believe in being positive and honest. I have been very fortunate in my life - great things have happened to me. Most of it has been because I keep a positive outlook most of the time. On a daily basis, I hope that every day I can make someone smile, and that every day I can learn something new.
