Julia's Story
Life
Greetings!
I am happily married to Alan Siporin and living in Eugene. I've been teaching mostly third grade & a 3 yr stint at middle school for the past 22 years. I'm going half-time this next year so I can enjoy more of my own life. I do quite a bit of yoga, I knit, garden, write, and travel when I can. I spend too much time working at school & playing with technology. I hang out with family which includes 2 grandchildren among others. I still enjoy spending leisurely days on the river swimming, relaxing, & grazing on homegrown fruits & veggies. All in all, I love life; eating great food from the garden (We harvest about 80+ artichokes each summer as well as 5 kinds of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, corn, eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, herbs galore, roses & other fragrant flowers .... you name it; it's paradise.
My husband does the lion's share of the garden, stonework, & waterfall construction on our property. He published a literary thriller several years ago called "Fire's Edge". I created a web page which I'm not allowed to post ( ??) The novel was chosen as one of Oregon's top three novels and was Eugene's 2nd annual community-wide read called "Readin' in the Rain". It's a fairly gritty novel that deals with racisim & homophobia; high school students have really devoured it which is exce...Expand for more
llent. For a lot of kids, this was the first book they ever finished.
Alan & I went to China in 2009 - I was invited to be a delegate for a language & literacy delegation. We visited classrooms in Beijing (cough, cough), Xi'an, & Shanghai. Walked a few miles on the Great Wall. Amazing!
I hope to catch up with folks in July.
Enjoy,
Julia
College
Soon after completing my undergraduate degree in Chinese History at the University of Oregon, I went into the Teacher Certification program and got my masters degree in 1988.
Workplace
For the last 22 years I've been teaching mostly at 3rd grade in Eugene, OR. I taught middle school for three years; I loved my elective courses - Racism Free Zone (Our school was the first in the country to have one - Jessie Jackson came to our ceremony!) , Yarn Arts & Tea, We Can Make a Difference, Teen Issues, Writers Workshop, Earthday Everyday..... I moved down to elementary schools where I taught TAG and Technology programs for a few years and then into a 3rd grade classroom at a Japanese Immersion school (Yujin Gakuen). After 12 or so years of that I switched to an all day English program, again teaching third grade which I love. I've been in that school for the past 7 years. I'm going half-time this next year; the whole focus on excessive testing is a drag.
