Julie's Story
Life
Life has taken on a new meaning to me. For most of my life I was active in the community through volunteer work with various organizations. In 1995, I realized that public service could actually be a career when I went to work for the City of Plano. In 2003, I became the City Manager for the City of Oak Point in Denton County, Texas. As of March 2007, I am now the City Administrator for the City of Dickinson in Galveston County - yes, I have moved to the Gulf Coast (and just in time for hurricane season!). I absolutely love my new city and home. Who knew that being so close to the ocean would be so cool!
My volunteer/public service took a new path in May of 2004 when I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Despite the ordeal (4 surgeries and 4 rounds of chemo in 7 months), I am thankful to have gone through that experience. It prepared me to help numerous people going through various kinds of cancer. Plus, I have gotten involved with the Komena Foundation and increasing awareness about breast cancer and early detection as well as finding a cure for this terrible disease. My servant leader spirit has now found a new outlet!
I live in Dickinson, Texas, and enjoy being on the Gulf Coast now. I am single with no children. In the little spare time that I have, you will find me at Jazzercise, rollerblading, scuba diving, traveling, working on my new house and y...Expand for more
ard, reading, etc. I'm also enjoying exploring my new part of the State where there is so much to do!
School
In the past year and a half, I have run into several BA alums--one of whom is actually an employee of mine. It has really made me remember high school and all of the crazy things we did and said. Looking back, I wish I had been involved in sports and less worried about what other people thought of me. But I have many fond memories of my friends and specific events.
Workplace
I am currently the City Manager for the City of Oak Point in Denton County, Texas. It is a growing city with a population of approximately 2,200. I love being able to Âgrow a city and make a difference in the lives of the
residents and surrounding communities.
Prior to serving with the City of Oak Point, I was with the City of Plano, Texas. I was in the City AttorneyÂs Office for four years before becoming Assistant to the City Manager. While Assistant to the City Manager, I created the Intergovernmental Relations
Department and was responsible for
utility, franchise and right-of-way management as well as lobbying on both the state and federal levels on utility and right-of-way issues.
In May of 2002, I received my Master's Degree in Public Administration from UNT. I am active in the Texas City Management Association. I love my career and mentoring young people in the profession.
