Julie's Story

Life I am married to Roman for 18 years & have a total of 6 children. To clarify, my husband had 3 children, I had 2 and together we have one for a total of 6 beautiful kids ranging in age from 15 to 31. We now also have a 2 month old grandson born 8/21/07. My oldest, Josh VanHorn, is 25 & travels around the nation as a sub-conractor for AMF repairing and installing bowling equipment, a great job for a single guy. My 2nd child, Geoff Van Horn is currently in Iraq on his 2nd tour. When he is not in the mid-east he is stationed in Anchorage AK w/his wife Rachyl. Our child together is a 15 year old girl who is very sports minded, loves school and has just started driver's ed. Ick. My stepchildren are Rachel who is 31 and an Engineer in Milwaukee, my 30 year old stepson Nathan lives in Southern CA and is loving life there. My 25 year old stepdaughter Julia is the mother of our grandbaby Brodee. Her and her husband live only about 30 miles away and we are very glad of that because we can get our hands on that little baby with relative ease. I am a Supervisor with Graebel Co in the Independent Contractor Administration Dept., I've been with Graebel for 13 1/2 years and absolutely love my job. On the side I am working with an Army Major at Camp Victory Iraq and helping support an orphanage with 480 orphaned children. So far we have supplied them with 150 lbs of school supplies, 20 boxes of stuffed animals for lonely little hands to hold and supplies for the soldiers who deliver all of this to the babies. I've been "supporting the troops" since 2003 when Geoff was first deployed over there by sending major quantities of everything and anything a soldier would need in the desert and have since changed my focus to the little children who have lost their families due to the war. I call it my "Bringing Back Iraq" project and am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished. I work closely with another girl at Graebel, Sheila Schmidt, and we solicit all kinds of donations all year long and use any money we collect for postage. All of the goods that are sent over are donated by workers and drivers of Graebel for the most part. It is a wonderful venture and I have been lucky to have it as a distractio...Expand for more
n since I lost my brother J.P. on Sept 10th. Those of you who know us know that my brother has suffered heart problems since birth. I'm sorry to say that he has finally succumbed to his heart defect while undergoing another heart surgery at St Mary's Hosp in Rochester, MN. My brother left behind a wife and 2 boys, ages 6 & 11, in Oak Creek, WI. We are all trying to figure out how to go about our lives without him, he was such a central figure to all of us who loved him so much. I guess with the loss of my brother I'm feeling more reflective and I think that's why I am here, looking to the past while trying to figure out the future. Anyway, this is what I've been pretty much up to since graduation in 1979. I can't believe how fast life is going! School I graduated from Gladstone High School in 1979. My one wish is that I would have kept up with some of the people I went to school with since graduation. I had moved immediately away to Grand Island, NE and never really kept up with many of the people I went to school with. For a while I did but then as life got busier and busier and we grew up and changed I kind of feel like I dropped off the face of that earth. Maybe the next reunion I'll make an effort to attend, it would be nice to see some of my old girlfriends that I'm missing now that I'm getting "old". College Yep, I definitely should have applied myself as far as schooling is concerned. I am a lover of education so why didn't I take care of my own? Hmmm... Something to ponder on some day. Workplace I have been working at my current job for over 13 years. I am an "Independent Contractor Administration Supervisor". Long title, but we just call it IC Admin. I work with truck drivers who are contracted to Graebel Van Lines which is a moving and storage company based out of Wausau, WI & Denver, CO but with branches all around the country. I truly love my job but I put way too many hours in. It is very addicting, always something more to be done or a driver to be helped or employees to train. It's a good place to be. Military After hanging with my "Explorers" group up at KI Sawyer during our Jr and Sr years I had considered the Air Force but I didn't pursue that thought for long.
