Julie's Story

Life Hello all! I'm not sure how I ended up on this site, but fate has brought me to it. I see there are a few "old" classmates on the list. What have I been doing? Well, I finished my Psych degree at Western in '91 and moved to B.C. in '93. I was living on Vancouver Island (Courtenay) for 8 years and then I moved to Vancouver for 2 years. I moved to Saskatoon in Jan. 02. I'm currently working as the Director of Community Programs for The Avenue Community Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity. I "came out" when I was 21. I have a step-son who's 16 from a previous relationship. I've been in my present relationship for 3 years and we sued the provincial and federal governments for the right to get married and we won. Soooo, we got married in September 2005. That's it for now. If I come up with any more brilliant ideas, I'll update my biography! School What to say? High school was a fun time for me. Looking back, I probably wouldn't have worried so much, but what teenager doesn't! I loved my friends, sports, Mrs. Hess' chocolate chip cookies and yes, alot of my teachers. No, I don't think I'd want to go back, but I have many fond memories that I will treasure forever. College Well, I went to Western and had planned on majoring in Biology and applying for Physiotherapy. However, I hated the chemistry and the physics, so I did the natural thing and switched to major in Psychology! :) I'm hoping to do my Master's degree in Counselling Psych in the next couple of years, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm just not thrilled with the idea of being a student again! Workplace Let's see. Work has always been something that gives me alot and helps to keep me grounded. After gradua...Expand for more
tion from Western, I worked in London doing home support type of stuff, but wasn't feeling very satisfied with it. So, I packed my bags and moved to Vancouver Island. I spent 5 years working for the North Island AIDS Coalition - doing support with people infected with HIV/AIDS and also teaching sex ed in the schools and at the college. I then moved on to Vancouver where I was the Program Coordinator/Executive Director for Youthquest! It is a provincial organization that runs drop-in programs for queer youth all over B.C. I was responsible for the 7 drop-ins in the Lower Mainland area and then become ED, so was responsible for everything! Aaaahh! I was also working for the Elizabeth Fry Society in a half-way house for womyn who had been released from prison on day parole. That was quite the experience and I learned alot! I moved to Saskatoon in January 2002, and have had a few jobs since I got here, but am now permanently employed. I worked at AIDS Saskatoon for a few months on a contract to write funding proposals. I finished a contract with Save The Children Canada. I was working with 4 youth who were exploited in the sex trade. We did some job skills training and life skills building with them. I've been working full-time at The Avenue Community Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity since February 2002 as the "Director of Community Programs", so I run the drop-in for youth and also do education in the schools/university about homophobia/heterosexism. I'm now also running a project about domestic violence in lesbian relationships, so I'm doing training with local service providers and a community awareness campaign. That's it for now. Who knows where the path will take me next!
