Julie's Story
Hi Friends! Well, as you probably know, I graduated early so I could get married in May. I married Steve Cox. He graduated Newark High in 1969. He was in the navy and we had to move to Charleston, SC. We were married for 6 years, and, with an 8 month stay in Virginia, had a Wonderful son. We moved back to Charleston, where we lived for 5 years. We got a divorce, but remain very good friends. I married John Burden, who worked at Sears at the same time I did! Love at first site! We lived in Charleston for another 8 years. My father got Cancer; non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I felt very strongly that we needed to get out there to be there for my mom & dad. John & I lived in Sugar Pine, which is due east of San Francisco, in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. We lived at 4500 feet, among the clouds; it was SO Beautiful there, and peaceful; it was truly God's Country, as my Father told me when we first got there. My father passed in 1990, and I had my first back surgery in 1991. 7 years after dad passed, and my mom was all set up in her new home, I felt that feeling again that John's parents needed us. They were both 89! Then we began to get letters from John's brother, telling us how John's Mom & Dad were getting around(Driving). Dad Burden had one eye, and maculer degeneration in the other. Mom Burden was telling dad where to turn, when to stop, etc, etc. Something kept telling me that we had to go back, and take care of them. So once again, we packed our bags, leaving our beautiful house in the Sierra Nevada's, and all our furniture, etc. and moved back to South Carolina, Anderson this time, and tried our best to take care of them, and keep them out of a nursing home. I figured we'd be out here for, what, 2-3 years?! Well, the family has great genes; they lived till the ripe old age of 97! We were full time caregivers till Mom was 94 and Dad was 97. By then, we couldn't ...Expand for more
afford to come back home to California. We've been here 13 LOOONNGG YEARS and I'm so homesick!!
This is the main reason I joined Classmates. I needed SOMETHING to link me to my home. I cannot think of anything more precious to me than to find my friends and reconnect.
I just had my third back surgery this last May, and am in a lot of pain. I also have degenerative disc disease, 7-8 herniated disks, and no disc at the last 2 vertebra. I also have fibromialgia. I'm kind of a walking body of pain! But I try not to let it get to me!
I have sold on eBay for 10 years, mostly toys, which is really fun!
I have been sculpting with polymer clay since about 1977. I started sculpting cartoon characters about 1-2" tall. I just started sculpting fairies, and I have found my creative love. I also oil paint, play my piano, and would play my flute if I still had one. I also love sewing stuffed animals and dolls. I sold a lot of those in the past!
In June of this year (2010) I rode an ambulance to the emergency room with the worst stomach pain I've ever had! Well, after waiting 12 hours, my surgeon did emergency surgery on me and found a perforated colon. about 2 more hours and I would have been dead. When I awoke in my room, the first thing I felt was a colostomy bag, which I was very familiar with, since John & I took care of his Dad's for 8 years. I panicked until I found out that it was temporary. I was in the hospital for 9 days. So here I am Jan 13, around 3 months past the second surgery to put me back together again. In a lot less pain, and so grateful that I am still here, and got rid of that awful bag!
God Bless you all! Your friend forever, Julie (Thut) Burden
One of the people from my past who I'd really like to get in touch with is Patty Phillips, because She was such a good friend, and one of my Bridesmaids in my wedding to Steve...I really love her as a friend.
