Kanani's Story

In high school, I played volleyball, water polo, and softball and was a member of Girls' League (blood drives, Mother/Daughter tea). I earned a full athletic scholarship to play softball at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I earned a few smaller academic scholarships to help offset the cost of living while at college. While at college, I worked part-time as a tutor and mentor for student athletes while training for each upcoming softball season. I was a pinch runner my first two years of softball and a starting outfielder my last two years (center field as a junior and right field as a senior). I hold the single season record for HBP. In my last year as a Rainbow Wahine, we had the best season in Hawaii history and went to the Women's College World Series after upsetting #1 seed Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional. We lost to UCLA and Arizona knocked us out of the double elimination tournament on my birthday. Although unfortunate, we had the most amazing time with our post-season run. in Medical Technology. I graduated from college in 2011, finished my clinical rotation, passed my Medical Laboratory Scientist Board of Certification Exam later that year. I’ve been working as an MLS ever since. My role as an MLS involves running all laboratory tests. What does that mean? I test your urine and tell your medical provider that you’ve got a UTI. Or you’re pregnant. Or you’ve got an STD. I test your blood and inform the staff caring for you that you’re septic with MRSA. Or are anemic. Or have cancer. I run your COVID tests. I do all of that and more behind the scenes. As a patient, you will never see me as I work out of sight, ensuring your medical teams has the most accurate laboratory results to base medical decisions off of. I met my husband through a mutual friend. We tied the knot in 2013. When he finished his time in the military, we moved to North Carolina. I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Management with a Certificate in Specialist in Blood Banking Technology in 2020. I will sit for the Specialist in Blood Banking exam in 2021.
