Karen's Story

2013 the View from here: The calendar pages keep turning… It is now 2013 and my husband and I are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. It seems like the wedding was just yesterday. But, time has passed. Our oldest daughter is married and I now have a “son”-in-law. It was my easiest labor and delivery! Retirement times are ever closer! Where to live, where to retire, where, oh where, oh where! Still don’t know the answers yet, but we are having a lot of fun looking. Wayne and I still love railroads, trains and riding trains. Last fall we rode on the Southern Pacific Steam Engine #4449 as rail fan passengers from Portland OR to Bend OR (Overnight) and back to Portland. It was the best vacation trip ever! We still volunteer in the summer at the Lick Observatory for the Summer Visitor Programs and Music of the Spheres Summer Concerts. If you haven’t been to one of the concerts, I highly recommend checking one out next summer. I still have a pet tarantula named Spider. She is 14 years old and since she could live to be 25, I plan to keep her a while longer yet! She is the best pet ever! t these past few years have brought a lot of changes. Our district cut back the libraries to just 4 days a week 3 years ago. They also reduced the hours at each school, so I was switched to Holly Oak from my beloved Dove Hill. Then the next year I was switched to Silver Oak where I am now in my 3rd school year and that change brought me back to 27.5 hours a week. The furloughed Thursdays gave me the opportunity to take rocks to share with students at several schools. Geology is covered in 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades so I had a lot of fun during those “Rock Thursdays”. Eventually I did rocks at 8 different elementary schools and 1 middle school. This school year we are back to a 5-day library schedule and a whopping 32.5 hours a week. That brought an end to the major rock hauling in my life, but I am still working with 2nd grades at 4 schools helping create egg carton rock collections for each student. That is a lot of little rocks! I also get to continue to do rocks with my 4th & 6th grade students. Some things change and some things stay the same… Hope all continues well for you in this time of our life. The 40 year reunion is just around the corner! - Karen
