Karen's Story

I left Berrien in 1980 when I joined the Army. I went to Ft Jackson SC for basic training, Ft Gordon GA for school, then was assigned to the Pentagon in 1981, working telecommunications. I left the Army in early 1985 and went to work for the Department of Defense in the fall of 1985, which is for whom I've been working for ever since. I currently work for the Defense Logistics Agency as a Video Conference specialist, located at Fort Belvoir, VA. My dream is to retire as soon as possible. I have two children, Leslie and Nick. Les lives in Baroda with her two kids, my lovely grandchildren. Nick lives with me in Alexandria, VA. Les is 33, Nick is 24. I married my husband, Mark, in 1998. He has three adult children, 2 in New Mexic...Expand for more
o and 1 in NC. I realized the other day that I have lived in Northern Virginia longer than I did in Michigan. While I do miss some things about home, I truly love where I live. Virginia is a beautiful state with the mountains to the west and the ocean to the east. Washington DC is very close and it's fun to have the monuments, museums, and many many historical places in my 'back yard'. I must say that my most favorist thing about where I live is the closeness to the mountains. I love to get in my car and cruise west, spending hours driving the country roads. While I do live in a very populated area, I can be in the country in 30 minutes. We love to rent cabins in the Shenandoah Valley for long weekends. Such a beautiful spot.
