Karen's Story

Life Just retired from 28 years of teaching elementary school in 3 different states: Texas, Illinois, and Missouri. Live in St. Charles, MO just north across the Missouri River from St. Louis. I was divorced in 1972, and my second husband died in 1981. He was an Illinois farmguy and we had 3 kids, whose ages are 31, 35, and 37. I have one granddaughter who is 3, and her new sister was born in Jan. of 2006. I'm not sure what I will do with my time since I won't be grading papers for 5th graders (also taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th during my career). My 31 year-old son, David, is Down Syndrome, so I will not have an empty nest, but that is fine with me. He is very active in Special Olympics, and works at Target. I will be bringing David to the Reunion in the fall of 2012.. My 35 year-old daughter, Marybeth, is a Biology/Chemistry grad of U. of Illinois, attended classes after her BS and is an accredited MedTech at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Oldest son, J.C., is a P.E. teacher/football coach/bass player in a band/and does many Mr. Mom chores, since his wife is a Senior Manager for Deloitte & Tousche and pulls down big bucks. Since everyone has an education and a job, I will soon be joining Silver Singles, and participating in some speed dating for seniors. Well, I'm not positive about that........the mirror doesn't lie, and I have been out of the dating game since 1984. I still want to write a book, or be a stand-up comic. Trying out for the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, or the Muny Theater Chorus might be fun, too. Right now it's just great to sleep whenever I want (although I know I won't catch up on the sleep deprivation hours from being a single parent for 30 years). My parents and both sets of grandparents have all passed away, and I have an aunt and 2 cousins still in Texas. I haven't kept up with many people, but hopefully I can make some email connections through "classmates" and find out how old friends are doing now. It would be wonderful to hear from you........Karen Adams Kime School I can remember riding the bus to Reinhardt Elem School in Dallas and seeing people stare at me because I had about a million freckles. I smiled at them and usually made a lot of friends that way. Gradeschool crushes: Randy Craven, Ronnie Rosenberry, Tommy Sims, and George Helton. Junior High crush: Bill Yarbrough Best classmate/teacher: Nancy Montejo for Physics. Colle...Expand for more
ge Graduated from UT Austin in 1966. Member of Alpha Chi Omega. Learned to play a mean game of Bridge, along with Poker & shooting craps. Took part in Varsity Carnival, Sing Song competition, University Chorus, and went to a lot of football games. Do you remember spring "Round Up"? Would like to find a football player who asked me out when we were both in Speech class with Dr. Kissell. Actually, I am very happy that Dr. Kissell received an outstanding Professor Award when I was at UT. His classes were great. I especially liked it when he taught Advanced Platform Speaking, and he made the shy people take a rolled up newspaper and hit the podium while they were speaking. Everyone in the room, including the person speaking, was laughing hysterically. So much for being afraid to get up in front of everyone and talk--they were never shy again. A lot more people attended Texas than I realized. Bob D. tended to keep me away from the people I knew. Didn't think about it at the time, but now I know that since my Mom was emotionally abusive to me, it caused me to expect the same treatment from Bob. When my dad died our senior year at BA, my first thought was that my mother would surely kill me! The realization of all this caused me to crash into depression for 9 months in '01 and '02, and I am still fighting to control it. When I met my second husband, I told him I was dumb, ugly and stupid because I had been convinced that I was. Luckily he didn't believe me, and proved to me that I was just the opposite. His death in 1981 was devastating to me. He was the love of my life and all of you would have liked him. He was a Viet Nam vet, Air Force, and finished college on the GI Bill at Illinois State U. , Bloomington, IL. I taught 2nd grade there and worked for the phone company after JC was born. We moved to Kewanee, IL, an awful place where Jack taught in 2 different High Schools. Marybeth was born there and we never saw Jack because of the work load. She didn't even know him hardly. Then we moved to Staunton, IL. Loved it there and David was born then. I stayed 3 years after Jack died and no one would talk to me because my situation was so different and little towns tend to be "weren't born here"? don't know you." Moved to St. Charles MO and taught for 18 years. Have retired now and am substituting. I have 3 granddaughters now and they are a delight!
