Karen's Story
Life
After high school, I got my B.A. in Liberal Studies at C.S.U. Sacramento. I took a semester off to live in Scotland and travel the United Kingdom while my father was there on a teacher exchange program. I graduated in 1992 and in 1993 joined the U.S. Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic for a two year stint. (1993-1995) I loved it. I became fluent in Spanish which has been of great help to me in California. During my time there, I taught Health Education and created a teen theater group who went into villages to teach about health. I also built 14 latrines. (I know that probably sounds crazy) I washed my clothes by hand (not as bad as it sounds) and collected water from a spicket outside every other day or when it would come. ds both volunteers and Dominicans alike. I married my husband Mike in 1997. He works for American Airlines. As fate would have it, he was flying to the Dominican Republic when I was selected to go there.
I worked in social work after I returned from the Peace Corps and then took a break and stayed home to be a full-time mom to our
2 great kids. Jacob (10) and Rachel (7).
I now have my own business doing Medical Billing. I enjoy the flexibility it gives me to work in my children's school and spend time with my family.
We are an active family, swimmers all four. (Jacob & I just completed our first triatholon together in August 08.) We love to hike, bike, kayak, ski and scuba dive. We reside in Rocklin, Calfifornia. That's my life in a nutshell.
