Karen's Story
I joined the U.S. Air Force in January, 1981. I went to Texas, then to Ohio for 2 years. I had a daughter, now 27. Then I went to West Germany (it was East and West back then) for 2 years, where I met husband #1 and husband #2.
I came back from Germany in January 1985, got out of the Air Force, and married husband #1, then moved to Grand Forks, ND. (We'll just call him Shithead.) After 11 years, he decided to divorce me for an older woman who looks like a cross between a horse and a longhorn. Good riddance.
In 1996, I got back in touch with husband #2. We had been friends in Germany, but things clicked differently this time. He had divorced his wife, and Shithead was gone. So we were both in North Dakota, and after a very brief courtship, I moved to Minot, ND and we got married the day after Christmas.
Now we live in a nice home on 2 acres in a tiny town about 10 miles from Shaw AFB, South Carolina. His name is Skip, and I don't think there are very many people who have a better spouse or relationship with their spouse. We'll celebrate 13 years together this year, and I can count on one han...Expand for more
d the number of arguments we've had. I am so lucky Shithead left. Talk about silver linings...
Skip retired in 2001 from the Air Force, and we moved to South Carolina to be near his folks. He's from upstate NY, south of Buffalo. We both draw disability for various reasons, (my back is shot) and it allows us to travel and visit friends. Or just go to a casino. Or drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, or go to Key West for Halloween.
Life is good, and I'm very grateful for all of the things we have and do. We go up to Mt. Vernon 2 or 3 times a year to see my folks, who still live in the same house. Sometimes Skip comes, sometimes it's just me. (They like it better when Skip comes, too. I think they like him better...)
So that's my life so far. I lost my 12 1/2 year old Scottish Terrier, Duncan, in March, so I'll probably spend the next couple of months test-driving new dogs. He left big paws to fill. So I have to find a hairier terrier.
I'm looking forward to the 30 year reunion. There are some friends I didn't get to see at the 25th, and I hope they show up for this one. That would be so cool.
