Karen's Story

Life I am now 38 years old and the mother to two amazing little boys, Carson (4) and Evan (11/2). My husband Scott and I have been married for 13 years and we reside in Richwood after spending the first 10 years together in Grant County. Just after high school I began my college career and continued through 2002. I have earned 2 separate Bachelor degrees, one in Education and another in Geography. I also have 12 graduate hours towards a Masters in Information System Management. I have taught in the public schoool system-6th grade, 1-3 grades. I have also taught at the college level teaching computer courses. In addition, I have worked in the adult education program in Grant County teaching GED (to prison inmates and others) and ESL to hispanic population. My last work assignment was in a retail setting working alongside my husband as a store manager. In my "spare" time I really enjoy working out- especially yoga. I have been actively practicing yoga for over 15 years. I'm no yogi, but it certainly has helped with my flexibility, weight control and mental well-being. It has also helped me to overcome a lot of the pain associated with my disease. I also enjoy reading - especially non-fiction, inspirational-type books; playing with my kids; shopping; and getting together with friends and family. At the present, I am a stay-at-home mom, but will be returning to graduate school in April '08. I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. lol. I will be working towards a Masters in Family, Couple, and Marital Counseling and hope to have my own practice locally when it's all said and done. One of the few gifts that I possess is being a good listener and deeply care about the success of others. Having been through similar counseling myself, I have certain opinions and insights that may be beneficial to those seeking guidance and support. Either way, I believe that it is certainly a way of helping the world become a better place. What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion? **Well, I haven't had much of an exciting life thus far. However, some might be surprised to know that I've had plastic surgery. Another thing is that I was close to death twice since graduating high school due to an autoimmune disease I have. Both bouts have included chemo and steriods....Expand for more
The second bout (the same year as the 20th reunion) I was in the hospital 5 times including a 2 week stay in Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Which teacher would you love to see again? Why **Well, that teacher would be Ted Otte, but I have already had the privelage of reuniting with him this past summer. We had lunch and talked about the old times. He also meant a lot to the group of us, because he was so handsome and intellegent. You could say we all had a crush on him. What's the wildest thing you ever did in school? **Probably that would be bringing vodka in soda botttles to school and drinking it throughout the day. What happened to your first crush? **I had several crushes in school. One was Patrick Garrison. He moved before highschool and I've never heard from him since. The second was Craig Mullins. Last I heard he is a football coach for Georgetown College and is married with children. David Hartke was anothe crush. I actually dated him after high school and I have seen him recently. He has never married. How do you hope old friends remember you? **Hopefully I will be remembered for being funny, intellegent, and kind of stylish. I really like to make people laugh so that would be a great legacy to leave. To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom? **I would be completed with my Masters in Counseling, living in a foreign country (such as Canada) and living in an old huge house with a bunch of crazy girlfriends. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise? **That parenthood is the hardest thing I've ever done! You get one do-over. What do you do differently? **I would have been more focused in my early college career. Chosen a field that I really was passionate about. I would have then gone on to pursue my Masters and maybe doctorate. I wouldn't have let "love" get in the way of my dreams. What's the weirdest job you ever had? **Being a stay-at-home mom. Where have you lived? Why did you move? **When I first married, my parents gave me 3 acres to build a house on. We built a "chalet-style" home and we loved it. However, we were in middle of nowhere out in the country. I'm more of a suburbanite and missed the sounds and conveniences of civilization. After 10 years, we decided to buy a bigger house that was closer to work.
