Karen's Story
Life
I finished school in December for the second time. Now I'm slumming it in Kent, living with my parents. I'm working part time in promotions for KISW while I look for a full time job.
College
College was a lot of fun for me (both times). From TJ I went to San Francisco State and majored in hospitality management. My second semester I did what I had said all through high school I would never do, joined a sorority. But joining Alpha Phi was one of the best things I have ever done. The greek system at SF State is a total 180 from most campuses. It was a great experience and helped me be more open, gave me leadership skills and taught me how to be comfortable talking with someone I just met. I graduated in May 2001 and spend time working in San Jose. In January of 2003 I went back to school to get a second Bachelors degree, this time in public relations. My two years at San Jose State were completley different from my time in SF. Not just because the cities are drastically different, but because SJSU was more like a real college, with an actual football team. I got the second degree for myself and enjoyed the school aspect of it more. I graduated in December 2004 and am done with school, but I said that in 2001 and I changed my mind. I can't say I'll never go back to school, just that I'm pretty sure I won...Expand for more

Workplace
I've had some great work experiences both in jobs I loved and jobs I hated. I interned for a men's ATP tennis tournament for two years in San Jose. It was great, got to meet Andy Roddick before he was a huge star and see Andre Agassi play. During that time I also worked in ticketing for the San Jose Sharks, which enabled me to go to a ton of hockey games without paying :) It helped me see every team in the NHL. From there I worked at Apple Vacations, a job I absolutely hated, but that let me go to Hawaii for free to check out hotels on Oahu and Maui and a discounted trip back to Oahu. So I really can't complain too much. The best job I've had so far was with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. I worked in community relations and media relations for them during the 2004 season. I got to write for the website, game program, plan player appearances, and just have fun. I also got to go to Phoenix to watch the team with the ArenaBowl, which was an amazing experience. During the fall of 2004 I worked for three San Jose radio stations doing promotions. It was fun and let me see some great artists in concert like Linkin Park, The Hives, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Modest Mouse and some others. March of 2005 I've just started working in promotions for KISW while I look for a full time job.
