Karen's Story

Who am I really...that is a tall order. I am very much a Sag. I love to travel and have done a moderate amount. For many years as a consulting Data Architect I contracted in various states, mostly in the Northeast. I really enjoyed my stints in NY both Westchester Cnty and NYC, respectively. I made the most of being in NYC. High notes while in NYC were frequently attending plays, book signings, art exhibits, and working in a boat building facility as part of the South Street Seaport Museum. I learned some carpentry skills while working on a 15 ft sailboat that I ultimately purchased. A beautiful wooden vessel that I just sold yesterday (May 16th,2009) to a friend who has hounded me to sell to him for the past two years. While in Washington DC I was a frequent attendee of all the Smithsonian has to offer. That, and concerts, study at the Library of Congress, art museums. While there I studied sculpting and the violin. I also lived/worked in MA, NJ and New Hampshire. While in NJ I lived/worked in Bedminster, Princeton, W. Orange. At one point I owned an oceanfront (view and all) condo in Atlantic City with a "Boardwalk" address (appropriate since my favorite game growing up was Monopoly and real estate has always been a passion). I was most alive amongst the people of the northeast. I've also lived/worked in Indianapolis, Chicago, Pierre,SD, St. Petersburg and Tampa. Along the way I always was attracted to interesting people, some have become longstanding friends even at a distance. My move to Florida hasn¿t been so kind. Within six month of my arrival, Sarasota was visitor to four hurricanes that arrived each consecutive weekend beginning in mid-May, 04. That was an omen, but I didn¿t realize it at the time. I have been struck flat by numerous setbacks, crisis, tragedies, whatever name is given. Five years later, suffice to say I¿m rea...Expand for more
dy for a change of venue. If anything, it has made me more real, i.e. less materialistic, more spiritual. Being humbled by circumstance can do that, if it doesn¿t totally break one¿s spirit. As for travel, I've traveled extensively in Spain and Ecuador with additional travels to Mexico, Paris and London for both business and pleasure. I spent the millennium new year 2000 on a 65 ft sailing vessel in the Galapagos - a real high note. Besides loving to sail I¿m an avid amateur photographer and a not so shabby cook. Two passions amongst many. Part of my therapy while battling with uninvited ill fate has been to tend to my gardens. Up until this year I¿ve focused mostly on a zero-scape front and backyard. No grass all plants and walkways. This year I¿ve made earthboxes and have tomatoes, cucumbers, figs, passion fruit, cayenne peppers, cubanella peppers, green peppers, ichabod eggplant, collard greens, swiss chard, okra, dill, stevia, rosemary, lavender, thyme and oregano. At the beginning of the next growing season (Nov) I¿ll increase my efforts to include various squash. Also, I¿ve mature mango, papaya and youthful avocado trees. As for family, I have a daughter, graduated from Univ of Mich, 92 who just turned 40 last Nov. She continues to live in Kalamazoo, MI and her passions are Mediterranean dancing and animal rescue. She shares my love of gardening, but even with foul winters I haven¿t convinced her to relocate. Truth is, she has an extensive support system with friends longstanding and a lovely home filled with her interests and animals! As of this writing, I¿m currently holding a part-time cashier position, under contract to sell a six unit apartment complex, renovating my house, working odd hours and managing only to tending the gardens and watching occasional movies on Netflix ¿ ouch!. Tough times are shaping my character.
