Karen's Story

Life in a nutshell Hi! I graduated high school in June 1972, married in August, had Elizabeth, 3 months prematurely, in October...don't do the math! Things didn't work out, so Elizabeth, Kim Perkins (Keifer...now "Rosa"), & I traveled up the California coast eventually settling in a small cabin at Ruth Lake (Trinity County) in the summer of '73. Kim moved to Blue Lake a few months later while I stayed in the Mad River/Ruth area for 8 years. We both took the big rig truck driving course at College of the Redwoods as a 1 semester course, but just prior to graduating with A's, it was changed to two semesters for certification. With a 100 mile round trip to school 3 days a week, the snow that year put an end to my 2nd semester truck driving dreams! Living in the mountains was quite a change from the ocean & crowded So Cal! I fished a lot, raised chickens, ducks, & goats, and Elizabeth and I had a great life. My life changed in 1975 when I lost my little brother Danny, at 18, in a car accident. rs later, my Dad retired from L.A.P.D, my parents moved up to Eureka from Hermosa, and I came down from my relaxed, idyllic life in the hills to be close to them and to get a job. I worked at Humboldt State University for 17 years, & then as a "farmstead cheese" cheese maker for a small, local goat ranch. In 2002, we won 1st Place & Best of Show in the aged goat cheese category at the annual American Cheese Society Show in Washington D.C. It is the top award for American cheese makers, and many companies, large & small, may work for years to hopefully attain the honor. It was truly a "Like Water for Chocolate" thing for me, and proved it as the cheese that won was made on September 11, 2001 after watching the attack on TV. Making & taking care of the cheese was the most rewarding & satisfying job I have ever had, and even though the ranch is now out of business, I hope to someday transform my garage into a cheese making room! I'm still in Eureka occasionally working as a care giver, & selling on eBay.
