Karen's Story
After U High I graduated from The University of Michigan with a degree in English Literature (only slightly more useful than a degree in the fine arts, Mom). I was married right after graduation but widowed a year and a half later.
For the following four months I lived in Seoul, South Korea with my parents and then accompanied them on a long trip home with stops in Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Greece, Holland and a few other countries. It was the trip of a lifetime! Back home in Ann Arbor, I got a job at University Microfilms processing Doctoral dissertations and Masters theses for microfilming and worked there for almost three years.
I was remarried in 1970 to John Thumm of Ann Arbor and the following Spring we moved Up North near Traverse City where my husband bought a small town dental practice. We’ve enjoyed the country life up here ever since.
In 1984 I graduated with an Associates degree in commercial art from Northwestern Michigan College. For the next two years I worked at a bill board company in Traverse City and then did freelance design work for a number of years. Having not succeeded much as a graphic designer, I turned my attenti...Expand for more
on to the fine arts where I received better success both career-wise and in personal fulfillment. I am now semi-retired primarily creating art for myself and sometimes entering juried shows in the local arts council’s exhibitions.
In 1989, I returned to the world of horses and quickly became the guardian of a very special horse, a relationship that lasted for over 28 years. Trail riding in the beautiful northern Michigan woods was our passion with dabbles in non competitive dressage to fill the rest of our riding time.
Around 2014 I took a summer workshop through the college in writing your memoire, and that has revived my passion for writing which was abandoned long ago. Having to say goodbye to my beloved Scottie in 2018 and then losing my sweetheart rescue dog, Misty, to a terrible disease the following year, left me in mourning and at loose ends. Writing came to the rescue! I’m currently working on a novel (about the world of horses, of course) as well as writing stories for a possible memoire.
Long ago, Miss Ryder wrote in my yearbook that she predicted I would write a sequel to “Bambi” and perhaps I will. We are surrounded by deer-filled woods, after all.
