Karen Wilson/Harlow:

CLASS OF 1966
Garden grove, CA

Karen's Story

Garden Grove was a great place to growup. I married my husband in 1966. I'm still with him and very much in love after all these years. I still can't believe I made the right choice excepting his proposal when I was so young. It's hard to say no to a persistant US Marine.LOL. We lived in Santa Ana, Cardiff by the Sea, Encinitas and creepy La Costa all in California most of the time. Then we had to move where the jobs were. Las Vegas was strange but Tim promised me a boat if I'd go. I loved my boat. We escaped Las Vegas after four years and ended up in paradise, Stanwood,Wa. Oh it was so beautiful. We had 5 acres which I landscaped three acres and cut trails through the rest that was wooded. I trimed the hugh ferns along the trail. It was heaven and so peaceful. Tim laughed at me for trimming back the trails and trimmed it nice and neat. He said no body trimmed the bushes in their woods. LOL a couple of years after the 911 attack on the world trade center Tim lost his job when Boeing cancelled all their orders at both large sheet metal plants he was in charge of. He also Managed 5 other separate business for that company. There were no jobs available after that. We lived on our retirement for as long as we could then bought a FastSigns Francise in Everett, WA with the rest of the retirement. I got my Brokers Real Estate License here in Wa and worked both at the sign Shop and Real Estate. I worked in Real Estate in CA & Las Vegas previously. Six months later, I was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in 2006. What a shock. I was told I had weeks to days left, but it could be cured. I almost fell off my chair. I went through very extensive Chemo, was out of my head and hospitalized for 5 weeks. After...Expand for more
I went home I had to continue Chemo treatments with 5 days in the hospital, sent home them within 7 days I was back in the hospital crashing. back out for 5 days then back to the hospital for 5 days chemo on and on for a year. At times I returned to the hospital with 25% of my blood volumn. I had dozens of blood transfusions and platlet transfusions. I finally went into remission. I returned to Real Estate but the Leukemia returned within two months. Then I had a stemcell/bonemarrow transplant. It's now been 4 years after transplant and I am happy and loving life but still recovering. I have adjusted to the new me because lots of changes after the transplant. I never would have know how much Tim loved me if I had not gotten sick. He stayed up all night when I was home giving me the intervenious medications I needed and still managed to keep our sign shop going. I don't think he ever got any sleep. I will never forget the look of love in his eyes when he cared for me. I am truly blessed having Tim protect me all these years. I am sharing my experiences to let all of you know you can survive Leukemia. This is a positive and successful story of survival. My daughters were dedicated to help me survive as well. When I had to stay in an appartment in Seattle within a few miles of Fred Hutchinsons Cancer Research Center where the Transplant took place with Wa University hospital. Tim and daughters Teri and Joy took tums as my caregivers getting me to my 7 to 8 appointents a day and when I would crash take me to Fred Hutchinson's where my life was saved many times. After 5 months living in Seattle I finally got to go home. I'm happy, love life and I wanted all of you to love life and be happy too!
