Karl's Story

Life Here is a not so quick overview of what I have been up to over the last 20 years. I actually graduated the Summer of 1983..I had to take Sophomore English for the third time...I really can't stress enough how important gerunds have been in the formative stages of my early adulthood. Armed with said knowledge, I promptly, over the course of two years, went to the University of Houston and flunked out of Geology, although, I did learn the ins and outs of bong-ology. Geology is very boring by the way. Bong-ology on the other hand, makes even bowling fun.... I went back to Austin and began to sit around with two of my best friends, playing spades and dulling my self-pity in a haze of smoke, getting stoned, occasionally looking for a job at the cookie factory or other 'high profile' jobs. Then, a turning point happened in my life. An Army recruiter knocked on my door and I, perhaps sensing tht my current situation was untenable and that I needed to make a break for it, decided to join the Army. I was sent to Korea after I received my initial training. I went there and started studying Korean. I then applied for interrogator school which comes with a year of Korean language, was accepted and sent back to Korea where I got to debrief North Korean defectors which was pretty cool. As I reached my 6th year of being in the military, I realized that it wasn't for me. I didn't feel like bagging groceries at the end of doing 20 years so I decided to get out. There are plenty of Korean linguists out there and they live in a place located in southeast Asia. I...Expand for more
ts called Korea. I ended up getting divorced over this decision and went back to Austin with my 1-year-old daughter, no job and about 500 bucks to my name. It was pretty scary. I got a job at Motorola in the semiconductor industry and started working there as an operator, which is basically a factory worker. I knew that I didn't want to do this for the rest of my life and I knew that I had to go back to school. I started school again in 1997. I transfered to UT in Chem Engineering and I finally graduated in 2003. College, the best twenty years of my life. I didn't get an engeering position until about a year later and I've been working at Micron in Boise and now Salt Lake City. I'm now an engineering lead and actually have 8 people under me on shift. We work hard and we have a great time. I love my job. My daughter is now 15. She is one of the nicest people you could meet. She is doing great in school. She is an incredible human being. High school overall was pretty much a nightmare for me. I was a year younger than everyone and weighed about 130 when I graduated. My home life was awful too and I attracted bullies like flies to crap. It takes a while to get over it, to flush it. I'm proud that I made it through the other side and that I'm not talking to imaginary voices, putting lipstick on, and making lists of people I need to get even with. Instead, I'm making another list, a list of people that befriended a cooky, little, nerdy, failure of a kid at an awkward age. To the people on that list, I thank you and wish you the best...Karl
