Karl's Story

Current Life: I live in a modest sized house that my unmarried mate (Patricia Roeller) and I had built in 2005. I enjoy local friends and activities like Theatre, Eating Out, Reading, Exercising at the local Health Plex, and Personal Development via Reflection, Courses, etc., as well as interacting with my 4 daughters (aged 47, 45, 26, and 23), when that works out; which isn't as often as I would like. I have a small private psychology practice; and enjoy learning new things professinally and in general. l want to reconnect with people from earlier in my life, so I joined Classmates.com and Reunion.com; and want to attend reunions as appropriate. Quick Overview of Education: Went to School in Denton Texas through 9th grade (June 1956), moved to Normandy High School in St. Louis MO area for a year, finsihed High Scool at Ferguson High (also in St Louis area) in 1959. Started at MU (Misouri University) in Columbia Missouri in 1959, where I attended through 1960. Resumed college at Wasington University, St. Louis in 1965, graduating in Psychology in 1967. Continued there in Graduate school in Psychology and Education, with side Trainings at NTL (Appled Behavioral Science-OD), in Motivation Training, in Interpersonal Communication, in Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, and in Gestalt Therapy and Bioenrgetics, completing Ph.D. in Psychology in 1975. History Through High School: I am from Texas, born in Houston in 1941, living in Dallas through the age of 6 or so, and them moving to Denton. I lived and went to school in Denton Texas through the 9th grade (Junior High), where I was active in Sports and in Band; and was a good student. I lost my friends and lifestyle when our family moved to the St. Louis area; and still am pulled back to and hanker to see my old Texian friends who went on to graduate from Denton High. in 1958 and 1959. I was a Boy Scout in those Denton days, too (Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, and such); and enjoyed that, so I continued as an Explorer Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster during my High School Sophomore year at Normandy High School where people initially called me Tex and I played Football and was on the track team. I was, initially, quite discombobulated by certain aspects of the big city (St. Louis); but I loved the Theatre, Symphony, Art Museum, Libraries, etc., as well as the hustle and bustle of the big city (Denton had been maybe 20,000 versus much more than 1,000,000 in the St. Louis area). I much enjoyed my year at Normandy, so I'm following up with the class that I would have graduated with if I had continued there, the class of 1959. After my year at Normandy, I moved to Ferguson. I then finished High School at Ferguson/Florrisant High and graduated with the class of 1959, after starting at MU for the Winter/Spring Semester beginning late in 1958 or early in 1959. History between High School (1959) & Ph.D. (1975): Quite a complicated and also rich period in my life, detailed in various places below. The latter portion of that period is partially discussed in the education section, below. First marriage and family: I married Judith Fuller in Columbia Missouri, and had two daughters, Cynthia (5-19-62) and Lauri (5-20-64). They have both grown up to be wonderful people; and I am immensly proud of both of them. More about them later. The latter portion of that period is partially discussed in the next section. Professional and Profession-Related: I'm a Clinical/Medical/Consulting Psychologist, with extensive training and interests in addressing Adult Trauma, Chronic Pain, ADHD, and Management of Chronic Medical Conditions. I also address and work with Marital and Relationship Issues; Habit Change via Hypnosis, Stress Management, and Interpersonal Communication. I do Group Workshops and Trainings in Interpersonal Communication, Group Facilitation, Motivation Development, Self-Hypnosis, etc.; as well as supervision of Pre and Post liscensure Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, etc. . I have evolved my own approach to enhancing Interpersonal Communication for Couples, Families, and Individuals. I was particularly helped with this, by my one of my four most significant professional mentors, Marshall Rosenberg, (Ph.D.) who subsequently codified much of his work in an approach that he now calls "Nonviolent Communication." "Motivation Training," as refined by Dr. Dennis Shea and I for Teachers had been based partly on what we learned from our main Mentor in that arena, Richard DeCharms (Ph.D.), who was and remains important to me. We also, in that area, appreciated the learnings and support provided by David McClelland, Ph.D., and especially Manohar Nadkarni, who was a Trainer from India working at that time for Dave as an Assitant Professor in the Department of Social Relations at Harvard. My third important area of Mentor based training was in Human Relations Training (GSPDP, NTL, a three year program to train Trainers and Organizational Development Professionals). This evolved into much work on my part in designing and implementing various Laboratory Traning, Experiential Learning, and Organizational Development work with a wide range of types and locations of organizations and groups. Most of this work was performed on a consulting basis during the years between 1970 and 1978; but has occurered occasionally since then. My Main Mentor in that domain there was Don Cole, although Jerry Riesel and many others from NTL were also helpful. My Fourth important area of Mentor-based training was with Dr. James Lefeber and several others focussing on Psychotherpy, especially Gestalt Therapy, Bionergetics, and Medical Hypnosis. Jim lived in Riverside California where I had gone in 1974 to be a visiting Scholar in the Psychology Department (also doing lots of work in the Education Department) at the University of California, Riverside. Jim (Dr. Lefeber) was a protege' of Fritz Perls; and I was delighted with Getsalt Therapy. Jim helped me also to develop my specialty at that time in what I then called Psychphysiological Disorders, and to start using a combination of Clinical Psychology and Laboratory Training skills to do psychotherapy groups, with which I became very proficient evolving, over time into psychodrama, and eventually to running the adult side of a major psychiatric hospital (Charter Grove, Corona, California) for several years beginning in 1979. I was in private practice as a psychologist in Riverside, California for the years between 1977 and 1989, during which time I began to get serious about understanding and treating what we then called Multiple Personality Disorders. That led me to the job at Kellgue Psychiatric Hospital doing groups for trauma clients, and ultimatly to running the adult half of the successor Hospital, Charter Grove. During that time (1977-1989) I had my second set of two daughters, Ashley in 1982 and Morgan in 1985, with my wife Mary Sanders, Ph.D. also a psychologist. Ashley and Morgan are wonderful; and I am very proud of them. My previous two daughters, Cynthia and Lauri had been born within another marriage in the early 1960s (see above). I also bought and much improved my first energy efficient house during those years, experimenting with Solar Heating an "Environator" and several...Expand for more
other energy advances. I also had a wonderful diesel Peugot sedan, which was very safe and comfortable, quite energy efficient, and, of course very speedy (would go from stopped to 60 in about 16 seconds on a good day). During that time I also became serious about Chronic Pain; and worked with Drs. Ken Lornze and Dwight Cornish to develop and run a treatment program for chronic pain clients in Riverside California. Althouigh not exactly a mentor, Dick Williams (Ph.D.), had previously introduced me to some of the most interesting things that I knew at that time about chronic pain, which has been a specialty of mine for the last 25 or so years. I moved to Santa Barbara in 1989, to start, with another physician friend of mine (Harold Weigarden), who is now in Isrial), a major Chronic Pain Management Program for the Rehabilitation Institute at Santa Barbara. I am currently in the midwest because I left that position in Santa Barbara to become the new Clinical Director of Chronic Pain Management Programs for Community Hospitals, Indianapolis. Karl Manders, MD and I then ran a major, nationally recognized program for the next 10 years or so (1992-2002), through several highly succesful CARF accreditation cycles. I am proud of my Chronic Pain Work, including the leadership, training, and effective systems that I brought to the two Nationally prominant programs, as well as the smaller program with Ken Lorenz in Rivereside, another inovative program in Indianapolis and smaller endeavors since then in Cincinnati and Fairfield Ohio. I have been a member of The Futurist Society for 30 plus years; and find that very useful, on both a professional and also on a personal level. Health I recently suffered a neurological illness including memory problems, and thought that I might have some form of Dementia, MS, or something. The symptoms are now gone, probably in response to my discontinuation of taking Lipitor "Thief of Memory," chelating away my Mercury and Lead toxicity, and changing my lifestyle (diet, exercise, etc.). I now feel better that I have for many years; and am able to both enjoy my small private practice as a psychologist and the opportunities offered by my partial retirement. Struggles: I have been struggling to achieve a better understanding of and/or position with regard to Divinity. I find this a challanging topic; and continue to explore it via readings, discussions, etc. One seminal event for me was when, at the age of 12, I was told by a Sunday School Teacher (as I saw it, an official representative of the Episcopal Church, and by extension, of Christianity as a whole) that one had to believe in Christ to go to heaven; and that persons of other religions, who believed in other gods, who didn't believe in any god, or who had simply never heard of Christ, would all go to hell. I couldn't countenance such a cruel god, so I quit the church that I belonged to along with Christianity in general at that time; and was as a result estranged from Christianity as a horrible, evil, judgemental, and exclusionary religion for most of my life. Years later, I learned that not all of Christianity was like that; but I never regained or even reconsiderred the possibility of re-embracing the wonderful faith and loyalty Christ and to the church that I had enjoyed during those earlier times. It was my loss as a person that I didn't discuss this with my priest, who was wonderful, or my parents; but I had learned from my essentially absent parents to make all of my own decisions and live my own life by that age, so I didn't confide this to anyone, to my great loss. By the time I started to do that I had already lived most of my life distanced from the cruel god that I had learned about (and of course, in that form continuie to reject wholehjeartedly). This left me starting from scratch in exploring religion(s) and the fundamental idea of diviinty. I am, on the other hand, receptive to other possible concepts of divinity, including even what I now see as the less primative and dogmatic versions of Chritianity. I have great admiration for Christ; but have never been able to bring myself to believe that he would be as dogmatic and cruel as my Sunday School Teacher said (and apparently believed, probably along with many millions of others) that he was. I do agree with Nietche who wrote that "Dogma ais a greater enemy to truth than lies" (are). Anyway the whole topic is of great interest to me, and is seriously on my agenda for exploration, and perhaps some form of inner conflict resolution. Politics and Government Concerns For the first time in my life, I am following the primaries closely. As you'll see from the end of this section, I have some values that I would like to see supported by the next president. I do see our national government as broken, which disturbs me greatly; and hope that we can at least partially fix it. On a related note, it scares my to no longer have an effective "Writ of Habeas Corpus," due to the Patriot act. I'm not particularly bothered so much by privacy violations allowed by the act; but I am deeply disturbed and frightened by the fact that any citizen can be "Disappeared" privately and without being charged with a crime, or ever seeing a judge. This is a clear violation of the constitution without a constitutional amendment. For me that is very disturbing. That most of my fellow citizens seem not to care about this or even notice it also bothers me greatly. Personal Values: I value and wish to preserve the US Constitution, which seems to me to be in some jeopardy via the Patriot Act and similar subversive governmental actions. I value Authenticity in relationships and communication, and Participatory Democracy, which I would like to see become prominent in the USA, and in the world. Along those lines, I like Leonard Cohen's song "Democracy," and would love to see it come true. New Directions: Professionally, I have recently been trained in EMDR, which I think is fascinating and is an especially useful form of psychotherapy for helping people to address previous traumas. Personally (and perhaps ultimately, professionally) I am fascinated by Shamanism. I have had some very useful personall growth experiences assisted by Shamans; and plan to further explore the the whole Shamanistic world, both for my own development and also perhaps to somehow employ professioanlly. Gratitude: I have become increasingly aware of how grateful I am to the very many people who have been kind, supportive, helpful, appreciative, friendly to, and respectfull of, me during my life. I hope to be able to communicate this directly to them as I am able to do so. This is an important project for me; and involves, where possible, reconnecting with many people with whom I have lost contact. This overall forum will help me to do so, mostly to just reconnect with people; but also, in some cases to express the gratitude that I feel and am mentioning here. Recent History (Written 11-4-2008): I have just returned from a trip to Texas to the 50th reunion of the Denton High Scool Class that I would have been part of had I not left Denton after the 9th grade in 1956. My mate, Pat went with me and was most supportive and helpful during the entire rather amazing process.
