Karl's Story
I was supposed to be class of 69. Bailed out of school in the middle of junior year 67.
Having been a late bloomer in life, I never quite fit in the school scene.
One year later at age 17 I found myself in the USMC.
The main reason I checked out classmates.com was to find one of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Lucky. Coincidental that her name was Lucky, because she was lucky for me. I did alright in her class, and credit that with saving me from being in a precarious situation in Vietnam.
All our orders read Vietnam for duty departing California. I was in the air wing and was supposed to be flying in C-130’s shoving stuff out the back to the Marines below.
Nixon was bobbing the hell out of Hanoi, so we were pulling back.
From California we landed in Okinowa and then we were supposed to go on to Vietnam.

, I was one of a few who were to remain on Okinowa. As I remember hearing one of the officers say, holy crap we got a marine that can type.
To this day, I thank Mrs. Lucky for having been such a good teacher. I was hoping to thank her, but it appears that I’m a bit too late. So I will say to her soul, thank you.
Another encounter I had flying from place to place in uniform, was running into Molly Stewart.
I was shocked that she even recognized me. She was very kind and supportive. You didn’t encounter too many people who were friendly toward guys in uniform during that period.
I live with my wife of twenty-five years in Ankeny, IA after living and working in various places.
I could not have done better marrying an IA farm girl.
I am pretty much unknown to most during my high school years.
