Karl's Story

Contact: karl[dot]sherlock[at]gcccd[dot]edu Okay. So, like most of these contrived on-line polls, the Q&A questions on this site are shills for niche marketing surveys to assess pop culture and consumer trends. If you've answered those questions, you should all expect e-mails about Starbucks or Folgers in your Bulk Mail folder by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. 8( Anywho, the real story after high school is that I got a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in English. Then, in the grandest tradition of young adult cliches, I ran off to Europe for a couple of years to "find myself" (i.e., to evade myself). More school, more degrees, and more cynicism with which to fill that half-empty glass. (Friends, I hate to break it to you, but it doesn't matter if the glass if half-empty or half-full if it's filling up with warm piss.) To make a longish story short (it's good to leave a little mystery, right?) I settled in San Diego; became a professor of English and Creative Writing for a...Expand for more
local community college; was mildly and, so far, permanently disabled; bought a home in El Cajon; and recently married my (male) partner of seventeen years in a legal civil marriage. (You can call California the "land of fruits and nuts" all you want, but it's the Midwest that spawns the crazy and dangerous Fundies.) When I'm not teaching, I'm writing or working as a paranormal investigator (yes, ghost hunter); watching anime with my husband; dusting our large collection of antique Jugenstihle, Secessionist or Arts and Craft Movement pottery; hating on crank right conservatives; shaving my head; or playing with my two parrots. I still have close friends and family in M'waukee and Chicago, but the one Thomas More High School friend who remained my best and closest friend and kindred spirit until he died tragically in 1999 was Mike Wiorek--always, always missed; always loved. That's it for now. Anything else I can say is about growing older. How dull is that, hey?
